Ahh, my favorite part of Christmas is the quality time that I spend with the family. Whether its helping Mom with the tamales, putting up Christmas lights or taking the kids out to buy fireworks its the most satisfying time of the year. Sure we try to treat everyday of the year like this but its not the same. The spirit of Christmas comes only in December.
Hope you all have a safe and MerryChristmas.

its true,, family time is an essential for a great holiday.tamales left n right, coffee pots boiling over whereever u go.it starting to look/smell alot like xmas! :D
i dont know about that firecracker warehouse,, with all the workers smoking around it KABOOM
I'm with you guys with all those good thoughts. I don't know I can say tamales left and right cause, it hurts to pay $12 a dozen up here. I guess I will have to learn how to make them.

u shoulve bought them in ep while u were there.. thats what i do. my mom orders the tamales and freezes them for when i go down. then i just bring them back in an ice chest. i know in ep.. 4 bucks is the top price.. mostly everybody sells for 3.50 .
If we would come straight home from EP that would probably work, except we don't always do that. We enjoy taking our time driving back and stopping in small towns. Also since we have a young child we stop more often. We make a 7 or 8 hour trip more like a 12 or 2 day trip. And that is why we pay a pretty penny for tamales.

i hear ya on the length of the trip part,,, but face it, ALMOST all tamales up here are commercialized(machine made). they just dont taste the same as back home. we've been lucky that my sister knows of some lady that makes them homemade.. but yea, she also sells them at a buck @piece. the worst part about ordering tamales here is,, u want chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, bean etc. u want green sauce, red sauce, yellow sauce, with or without cheese, in banana leaves or corn. u know what ever happened to may i have 2 or whatever dozen tamales.. u pay, split and enjoy. same thing with enchiladas... they have 1million choices for them now,,, before it was may i have an enchilada plate,, they would bring u the traditional/authentic cheese enchiladas. now they make all kinds of enchiladas..including dog meat (lolllllllllllllll) i know the flips do.
how food recipes change with time.and i guess it changes as u get away from the border.

they r easy to do.. the embarrada part is the hardest,./. and remember that myth that if somebody helping u or urself gets up to go pee during the tamal preparation,, ur tamales will come out pintos(spotted). whos recipe r u going by? do them authentic,, dont sub like for example.. chili powder for the chile pisado.goodluck mena :)
I have a friend from Monterrey that lives close by and willing to teach. I am going to take advantage of the offer. We have switched cooking recipes in the past and she cooks very authentic.
I guess the answer would be a friend, my mother in law (if she wants) and me.
I havent eaten tamales in prolly over a year... My favorite tamales are from my dad's momma... Mi Abuela, but she passed away a few yrs back... since then I have never tasted any tamales like hers... My mom dont make them, she dont like to... My Aunt makes them, and they are good. I love tamales tradicionales! Nothing like them in the world. The last tamales I ate were bought from some lady that was selling them but it was more masa than carne... I like my tamales gorditos of filling! mmm... :P
