Anyone know a good place to spend the night in Piedras Negras? Are the hotels pretty reasonable? Are they safe? Or is it better to stay in Eagle Pass and cross during the day?
Also, does anyone know a good seamstress in Piedras Negras?

Thanks!

You can stay at the Holidays Inn or Express, the Inn is like $50 per day and is more secure and has a bar Nickels, The other places are La Quinta about 40 per room, has summing pool on Avenida Carranza, The Best Western close to downtown about $50. There is also la Posada Rosa, you just have locate it, its about $40. Try to cash your dollars into peso, drive around to find the best deal on the exchange. Seamstress I do not know but there are plenty in town. I believe a cousin of mine does seamstress work, but I do not know where exactly she lives. I try to remember but I have too many cousins that I am still getting to know in life.

Jorge,

Thank you for your quick reply! Is it safe for a single woman to be driving alone in Piedras and also to stay in a hotel by herself? Is this acceptable?

It could be safe to stay in Piedras Negras. But I read in the Zocalo that the La Quinta night manager office got robbed at night. During the day is somewhat safe, but you always be aware of your surroundings. It does matter where you are in Mexico or US, if its going to happen to you it will. In the day you can drive alone, my sister has driven by herself. I have seen woman drive alone in mexico. Just be prepared if the police stop you, just offer them to pay the fine to them, which basically is a morida. They just want $20 USD. I do not think you will have trouble. I remember there is someone who sells dresses its the one the street that runs parallel to the new bridge crossing. Its close by the Pemex gas station. If you feel uncomfortable stay in Eagle Pass. If you know Piedras Negras then its no problem. There are many police on the streets. There was a few killings last year but I have not heard anything lately about drug trafficking killings any more.

The local mexico paper has a web site zocalo.com.mx.

Yes it was good to have a big family. Used get together when my grandparents were alive for Easter at one of their ranchos. I will be in Eagle pass this week leaving for EP on Thursday and will be there until the 28. There should be the Admistad Fevestial there.

Hi lindac, I'll be happy to escort you to and from piedras. I'm not looking for romance or anything like that but just thought I'd offer my help.

From a womans point. I wouldn't feel comfortable staying in Mexico by myself. I have cousins that drive to Mexico during the day by themselves but, when they stay in Mexico they stay in a group.

dido mena, even from a man's point, I'd think twice about staying in piedras. maybe we're exagerating a little but I've heard too many bad things about piedras.

I was reading the Zocalo web site and it indicates that another motel was robbed. It is the third one, itsthe Sol. The other ones were 57 and La Quinta. In staying in Mexico, its all luck of the draw. If you act too much American and belittle the Mexicans, some of them will beat the hell out of you. Just respect the people and they will respect you. The businesses want your money and they will treat you right. Its better to go to the Mercado on a week day monday thru friday because there are less tourist on those days. Weekends you will no be able to bargain down better than on weekdays. I also read in the Zocale web site that the Mayor, Bres, has changed the alcohol hours. He has indicated no more alcohol after 2 am. on weekends. No alcohol sold after noon on Sundays. The down town is being clean up and modernized with new stores, by the mercado area. Old buildings are torned down or remolded. You my get a ticket if you park in a pay parking area, it up to 8 pm in meters parking space. It will cost you 75 pesos, :(

If anyone wants my opinion, since i havent voiced it out in a while... Not that i seen or heard anything, but I would suggest for women not to go alone to Piedras... Better to be cautious than sorry... You dont know who is out there...

It doesnt only happen in movies!

MUCH LOVE
Rene

Jorge,

Thank you for the good advice. I usually walk across the bridge, but I really want to go to Los Castores or the Asadero Grill for lunch. I used to go to Moderno, but it's not the same since they sold it. I am thinking about taking a taxi from the Mercado. I am also looking for a place or area called La Villita (I think that's how you spell it). Is this area by Los Castores? All I remember was there was a bridge--or is it closer to the bullfight stadium? Could you let me know if you have heard of this area?

Also, does anyone know where a florist shop is in Piedras that sells nice roses? I can't remember if Soriana sells flowers.....

Thanks again, Jorge---

I dont know if Soriana sells flowers but there is a florist next the entrance. I purchased some roses there last year and they were really nice.
La Villita is a suburb Piedras and is just down the ways from Los Castores.

If you plan to bring fresh flowers across from Mex. make sure you find out what flowers are not allowed in the US. I was told by a lady that made a cake for us that she ended up using fake flowers after her ordered arrangement didn't meet the requirements to cross.

I dont know anything about the flowers.. but I have heard, while i was away from the VIRTUAL WORLD that over in Piedras, on your way back... when the soldiers stop you... to be careful if you drive a new, or moderately new car/truck, that they are slipping something in ur car and blame you to keep your car/truck or pay the fine... Supposively its a NEW EASY WAY to make money... Course, I heard it as a Rumor, but not taking chances... Does anyone know about this?
