I was wondering if there are any martial arts schools in the EP area? I am from Kingsville, Tx. I used to live in EP. Right now I am currently training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

You can try checking the Executive Health Club for any martial arts instruction. I know there was a man that was giving aikido classes there once, also another man was teaching shotokan karate, lately I am not sure there is a class going on there but it would be a good place to look.

Thanks for the tip. When i used to live in EP, I would go to a karate class given in Piedras Negras. Martinez was his last name. A very good teacher in self defense. Most of my experience foucuses on stand up fighting. I am now trying to catch up on ground fighting and weapons training. I think aikido is a good form of stand up grappling. I also heard there was a kempo school somewhere. Does anyone know of this?

There was a man named Jesse Sanchez that tought kenpo for a while. I studied under him when I was in high school. Don't know if he's still in EP though...

Actually I was friends with Julie Sanchez his daughter. I knew most of his students. Daniel Morales a friend of mine was taking classes there. I always thought it would be cool to have a brazilian jiu jitsu school in EP. If I ever become a purple belt I probably start a club over there. I takes about seven years to become purple. Some have made black in about 10 years. But you can teach up to your belt level. Promotions can only be done by approved black belts from Brazil. The thing i like most of Jiu Jitsu class is that you work your way up to vale tudo, which is no holds barred fighting.

So what styles do you favor. I think Kempo is a very good striking art with good stand up grappling techniques. If you mix the quick stand up fighting skills of a kempo fighter with the ground fighting skills of a grappler, you will get an all round fighter that should be ready for no holds barred.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? The only south-american martial art form that I was aware of is Capoera.

Yep Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been around for a long time. Way before Bruce Lee was making movies. The Gracie family began their style of Jiu Jitsu that changed the martial arts world with the introdution of the UFC( Ultimate Fighting Championships) hosted by Rorion Gracie. Royce Gracie proved to the world that a small fighter can defeat any size and style of opponent. Until later people started to jump in the jiu jitsu wagon and formed the now Mixed Martial Arts way of training. A new standard in martial arts where one trains in every phase of fighting. Which is standup fighting, grappling, and weapons training. Many of todays champions are made with this combination. As for Capoeira, the style looks nice, but has no effectiveness or placement in the martial arts world today.

Well I just heard there will be a school opening up in Eagle Pass this coming month. There will be grappling and kickboxing. Everything an mma fighter needs to get started. P.J. Talavera is the instructor.

Thats cool, I have known Daniel since elementary. Nowadays I like to train with some of my old friends and some new ones as well. I train regularly in Jiu Jitsu, plus i also like to mix it up with stand up fighting, to sort of get the feel of no holds barred fighting. If you are up to it you should try grappling some time. Appart from being one of the most effective styles to mix with, it give the practicioner a hell of a workout.

I enjoyed studying Hapkido but, it is always hard to find a place close enough to join.

The closest thing you can get to Hapkido in EP is Tae Kwon Do. Whigh is about the same thing.

If I decide in the future to pursue it again I would like to stick to the same thing. I appreciate your help. Right now, EP is a heck of a drive for me. Hey, do you know anyone that teaches Hapkido? The old master had his "license to teach" removed because he defended himself in a fight. :)

da_jackal
10-19-2004, 12:29 PM
Not sure who teaches it and is good. The only ones i know of teach Tea Kwon Do, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Kempo, Krav Maga, and MMA. I know plenty in Houston that teach Hapkido.

Do you like to train full contact to test your skills. I always like to train with different styles of fighting to get a feel of where my style is. Also i never stick with one style. I am always open minded about new techniques and old ones that work. There is not one style that is better than the others, but one way of thinking that is better than the others is to always learn something new and not stick to the old routine. Because people will eventually learn you and own you on the street.

I am not as experienced as you sound. I was a yellow belt. I would need to learn one style to facilitate the rest. My intent was to learn to defend myself incase I needed and because it was fun. To me, its like dancing learn a step and add to it, ones you know the basics. :)

When i came to EP most of my old friends that were brown belts or Teachers in the martial arts did not see me as a master, which i don't try to say that i am. But a well rounded fighter that took alot of time training and doing research as to what is effective. Now they like to invite me to their classes to give examples on counterattacks to their and other styles.

That's good. I no longer have that much freedom unless my daughter wants to learn the art. She seems interested at her young age so we will see.

My boy likes power rangers, i think when he is 5 or 6 I will start him up since that is the best age to start teaching kids. The little dragons learn much at that age since their attention span is greater than that of little kids.

My daughter likes the powerpuff girls. She enjoys dancing and has been taught how to give a good punch while protecting her pretty face. :)

Put a punching bag with an image of Bush and i bet she will tear that bag up in minutes, hell maybe seconds.

mena
10-19-2004, 04:37 PM
Not as fast as she would tear up a Jack*** image. Oh, and that represents Kerry's party    .

Hey, don't let ETX21 see this or he is going to get p***** if he sees we changed topics.

da_jackal
10-19-2004, 05:42 PM
Well narrow minded people should not post in this forum. Everybody needs to be open to several topics at the same time. Some topics talk about issues dealing with others, I for one am not going to talk exclusively about one topic and stop there to go to another topic and finish with what i was saying. B)

mena
10-19-2004, 05:48 PM
Exactly.

da_jackal
10-19-2004, 05:52 PM
Some people can't handle more than one topic, or others hate it when we don't stick to the same subject. But mixing it up sure is fun.

mena

 I agree.

Maybe if we talk about chinese food he won't notice since kung fu and kung pow chicken are kind of similar in culture. Also very effective against a mean appetite.

Oh, he is for Kerry, sorry.

da_jackal

Yeah, that's the spirit. I wonder why nobody put up a Nader Topic in the politics section.

Man if Kerry loses we will have Mrs Clinton running in the next term 2008, and you all know there are more women than men in the U.S.

mena

Will she get caught like Fmr. Pres. Clinton? It would only be fair. :)

da_jackal
10-19-2004, 09:10 PM
LOL, not sure but it would be a hell of a story. Also pay close attention what Jack Nicholson says to Demi Moore in A Few Good Men during breakfast when attorney Kafee ( Tom Cruise ) asks for a tower log.

mena

Alrighty. Well, can't you just post it?

lol! nuts...but ok im confused so who teaches what in eagle pass, is it open for girls (since you seem to know a lot about it what martial arts do you recomend for women?) and how do you get in contact with them!!!

da_jackal
10-20-2004, 01:12 PM
Women should take self defense, or Jiu Jitsu is a good way to go. A very skinny man with no shred of athletic ability defeated most of the built black belts in the UFC and all he knew was Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. For a woman to learn Jiu Jitsu with a little self defense stand up skills would put a woman with the big boys on the street and kick their big butt.

Do you live in EP, I know of some schools here that teach coed classes. On sundays at the lake under the helicopter around 3 to 5, a man from Uvalde comes over and teaches there, he trains in Tae Know Do and Jiu Jitsu. Another teaches next to best movies on Monday, Wed, and Fri. At 8:00 P.m. for an hour. He focuses on self defense.

Not a contract killer like the one in the movie if thats what you mean. I am a computer technician, web designer, photographer, martial artist, and Painter. The Quote is from the movie The Professional " no women and children" was meant to say that he would kill any mark except women and children. Which it looks like sylvrsun falls under the "children" category.
