Do People in Del Rio know the difference between a Mexican and a Chicano? How are Raza people involved in the political and social scene in Del Rio? What is happening for the future of the community? What happened to the people of San Felipe? Is there a San Felipe High School? Is it true that many people in Del Rio are Haters, and that they prefer to be called simply HISPANICS?

I don't think many people in Del Rio know the difference between a Chicano and a Mexican. I'm thinking a lot of people just don't care.
There is a Raza group of people that take part of things like the Ceaser Chavez March etc. but just a few people there really isn't much of a Raza Group in Del Rio.
The Future of the community is to grow just like it is in any small town. We border towns need to grow in order to survive. Without growth in our small communities there is no opportunities for future generations to remain in our town.
San Felipe is still there not as big as it used to be because of the flood that took several homes and forced the City to buy the land from the people for they will not rebuild, that was part of the FEMA flood Plan. Other than that there is still some small stores and many homes mainly of elderly people.
There is no San Felipe High School there hasn't been one in many years. We have San Felipe Middle School. Which served as the Districts 7th Grade until the new Middle School was built. SFHS is being remodeled completely. The School district has money left over from the 2000 Bond and that's how they are remodeling the Old SFHS building and building new classrooms to make it into the new Sixth Grade Campus.
I don't think the people of Del Rio are Haters of course like any City there has to be Haters no matter how big or small the town is. I think for Del Rio being it's size a lot of people live private lives and that can sometimes make people start talking and I can see your point on some people being Haters. Hater's in my opinion are the people that are jealous of other's because they have things they don't have. These "Haters" are every where they hate on the working class because they have homes and cars and cell phones and they wish they had the same. Just my Opinion of a Hater.
When I was in High School I remember if the topic of Race was discussed all the people would simply say I'm Mexican. There is no Chicano or Latino or Hispanic.

Thanks for your input pertaining to the people and the community of Del Rio, Texas. I appreciate it much. I hope I hear from others in the area, who have lived there, perhaps, born and raised in Del Rio.
I appreciate your sense of humor. I left my post open to different things. I didn't realize anyone would address everything. Thanks.
The Part about "haters" was mainly for teenages who might be out there, reading and responding to this Forum in a different way. So, again, thanks for your response.
I agree with your thoughts about growth in small border towns. This is terrific. I plan to move to Eagle Pass soon and I'm really looking forward to participate in the growth that is taking place there at this time.
The Idea of people identifying as "MEXCIAN" is interesting. I know people all over the country, who are third or fourth generation Americans, in the United States, and still identify themselves as MEXICAN. Many work for the Federal Government. They work for the State of Texas. And others have their own business. None of them have family in our neighbor to the south but yet they still consider themselves and identify with the term MEXICAN.
From a Del Rio point of view, is this a good thing? Yes, it's a free country and all. I have a right to call myself whatever I want. But in terms of Government, Geographics, country etc. is this important?
Is there any concern in Del Rio on this topic? How would National Security see this? Do you have any idea? Or what is your opinion?
Or is "MEXICAN" a way to quickly and/or easily identify people by physical features for/by some individuals?
Could it be our own people in certain areas (business, government, private persons, etc.) who have a certain bias (if you will) or definitions, or understandings of what an American is supposed to look like and therefore the people who look different from "that view" need to be identified in a quick and easy manner? Thus, MEXICAN. Does this make any sense?
I have met some people who don't see themselves as American and yet work hard each day in this country, pay taxes, pay social security, pay a mortgage, etc. etc. Is there something different here?
COULD THIS BE A DANGER TO THE STATE OF TEXAS? If ONE OF THESE YEARS, with a majority of people considering themselves MEXICAN, could government, it's policies and busness, be affected in some way? Perhaps even seriously or drastically? Is this what happened with the Democratic vote during the last election with many "Mexicans" in fact voting Demo?
Thanks for your input. If you know others who would have information on this topic, please invite them. I'm not into government and politics so I'm no where near any answers.
Thanks Del Rio!

We are all striving for a better life and should concentrate on being individual humans instead of blacks, chicanos, Italians, etc...

I really don't fully understand your post. I guess you are referring to people that consider themselves Mexicans instead of Americans.
When I referred to my memory of High School and when the Topic of Race was brought up everyone would say Mexican. As in Mexican American not Mexican National. We live in a society where our Mexican American kids are grown up in a white society. We speak perfect English now. We know how to write the English Language well. We communicate in English without an accent. We grow up listening to Rock, Rap, Hip Hop etc...
A lot of people in Del Rio consider themselves Mexicans I have yet to hear someone say I'm not Mexican I'm Chicano or Latino. The point is our youth is as American as Apple Pie.
Take Mexico for example watch any show from Mexico such as "Hoy" and the people on the show are "trying" to speak in English. They listen to English Music in Mexico it's played on their Radio Stations. It's strange that a country that speaks Spanish with very few English speaking people has their Radio Stations listening to Rap and Rock in English. These people just like other countries are memorized by our American Culture. They think it's kool to eat at McDonald's or KFC listen to the Black Eye Peas and 50 Cent. And use small English Words here and there.
Like energy, points out there is no Chicano movement anymore. Energy is right that was something in the past.
I don't think Mexican American's have too much of an influence in our Government. Sure we have some Mexican American's working for the State and Federal Govt. But nothing more than that. We have that Gonzalez guy in Washington the Attorney picked by President Bush but he won't be there for Long once Bush is gone so will he.
