One Ciudad Acuña, Coah., Mexico police officer was killed and at least three others were injured in a shootout with suspected drug traffickers Tuesday afternoon, the Del Rio News-Herald has learned.
At least one of the suspected drug traffickers was killed as well.
As rumor of the shootout filtered across the Rio Grande, law enforcement officers in Del Rio, Val Verde County and the surrounding area shifted to a heightened state of alert.
Several stories about the incident were published in the Ciudad Acuña daily, Zócalo, this morning under the headline “Narco-attack in Acuña; murder of police and ‘paid assassins’.”
According to the Zócalo’s reports, the shootout occurred near the intersection of Fundadores (Founders) and Cedros (Cedars) streets in a section of the city located several miles from Ciudad Acuña’s popular tourist area.
The Zócalo’s articles, illustrated with lurid photos of the dead and injured, also indicated that the office of La Procuraduría de Justicia, similar to the state attorney general’s office in Texas, has launched a massive investigation into the incident.
The Zócalo’s reports stated that 11 persons were detained and at least five vehicles were seized following the bloody shootout, which apparently began after police attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation.
From the vehicle, local, state and federal law enforcement officers in Acuña recovered large-caliber weapons and uniforms of Mexico’s equivalent of the FBI, la Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (AFI) and the Mexican Army.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Border Patrol’s Del Rio Sector sent out a report informing local lawmen that the shooting had occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Ciudad Acuña neighborhood known as “Colonia Los Cedros,” located on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande.
The report noted that the firefight occurred between members of the Policia de Seguridad Publica (Police of Public Security) and “suspected narco-traffickers.”
The bloody shootout ended in the death of at least one of the officers and injuries to two others, the Border Patrol report indicated.
The report also stated that one of the suspected members of the drug-trafficking gang also was injured and one person was in police custody.
Later in the day, Acuña police arrested at least one other man and confiscated a stash of marijuana and AR-15s, a type of automatic assault rifle, the Border Patrol report stated.
