View Full Version : South Padre Island
What are the do's and don'ts of South Padre Island? I haven't been there in ages..
What is best hotel to stay on the beach? What are the better places to eat?
What else do you recommend?
I heard Bahia Mar had one too many springbreakers staying there. The lobby was nice but, not the rooms.
Where is the traveler Irenera? Any suggestions since you are the experienced one?

Sorry, I am not too much into Hotels,. I only get hotels when I got out of State. I get Condos when I go to the coast here in Texas
Condos vs Hotel.
Condos have more space, its more like an apartment. Kitchen is equip with Ref., stove and dishes pots and pans, Living room which the sofa turns into a bed,a bedroom, washer and dryer. You might pay a little more but to me its worth it. You can fine them by the beach or off the beach. I like them no more then two story high. Where you have excess coming in and out with out going through the lobby. I am not going to tell you which one, because we all have different taste.
Hotel is just a room to sleep, when you are just going to spent one night. You have to go out and eat out a lot, no ref,no washer or dryer, some hotels have washer and dryer by the coke or ice machines but most of the time is broken or full and it becomes expensive, cause you get wet towels, bathing suits and clothing everyday.
Make sure to pack your first aid kid, also. Meat tenderizer, and baking soda, if you get sting by a stingray, its very painful, look it up on the net on what to do Always wear water shoes when walking on the sand or going into the ocean.
What not to do, they don’t like for people to hang their wet towels, bathing suit or any wet clothing by the rail of the balcony. Be very careful if you decided to cross over to Mexico, its not very safe as you all know. Matamoros is nice, but I had the bad experience to be there years ago when they kill the young kid during spring break.
Places to eat there are a lot depending on what you want to eat.
If you have children the best place to take them is schlittletrbum misspell word but its close enough. It’s the best water park for children and adults; you can take in an ice chest with food and drinks. They don’t let you take in beer, because they sell it there. Well I hope this help a little. Look on the net on south Padre I and am sure you can fine a place to your liking. Good luck and have fun.

I was looking for a hotel cause I don't plan to cook, clean nor wash while at the island. We only plan on sleeping at the hotel.
We eat out 90% of the time at Dallas prices so we are use to that.
The only thing about the post that I was not aware of was the meat tenderizer. What the heck do I need it for?
Thanks for the info anyway:)

I guess you must enjoy running around to eat. We usually eat one meal a day out. I keep the Ref full of munches and drinks, mostly salads. I like to buy fresh fish and shrimp. One meal fettuccine with shrimp, no Alfrado. Another will be fish cajun cook with white rice. I am very picky on my food. As for washing, I hate wet clothing, they smell by the next day. Unless you plan to just stay one day. I usuall stay 4 days or more. I like to wash everyday cause I sure don't plan to come home tired and sunburn and wash all thoes wet clothing full of sand, wash shoes and other things you might take. I just want to come come and lay in bed for a rest. You know how the saying goes, you need a vacation from your vacation. Ha, the meat tenderizer, is good for Jelly fish burns, also for stingray or sea weed burns on your legs that will make it itch. The stingray is the worst. My husband got sting by one as we were getting out of the beach. Its so painful I had to take him to the hospital. They xray and made a small cut on his foot to get the stinger out. I was driving home, he was in so much pain he use to tell me shoot me like a horse. I had to stop on gas stations to get hot water so he could put his foot on. "Men" they can't take pain. Once I fell down the peer on down town beach at CC. I end up with big cuts on my leg, life guard didn't know what to do, I was bleeding, good old meat tenerizer, my husband put it on and band it the bleeding stop. I end up at SAT hospital end up with twenty stitches. We live it through all except a shark. I don't want to scare you, just have fun. And enjoy your days.:D
OK Irenera let me get this straight. You fell down the peer and you got alot of cuts on your legs then your husband put meat tenderizer on the cuts and.....

I agree with you Mena. When I go on vacation, I go on V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N. If I wanted to cook, clean and wash then I would just stay home. There are great hotels on the beach and great restaurants in the area as well. If one can afford a condominium or beach house, then one can to spoil themselves and use laundry services and eat at the restaurants of their choice. My brother lives in that area and knows the Bahia Mar well. He says that after Spring Break, the place is not half bad and service is better than during the break. No matter where you stay, I hope you enjoy your vacation!:)

Yep, I am with you in a way, but not all the way. The coast here is not a vacation for us. Its just a getting out. Its just an hour an half drive. Its almost like going to Austin or San Marcos. Alot of the times g/f and I just drive over for the day walk the beach talk, have dinner at Landrys and come back. Sometimes just pick up and go to the gambling ship for 5 hrs then come back home. ITS JUST A GET AWAY WALA!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT I CALL V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N ANYTIME I GET OUT OF STATE, AND WATCH OUT.
Like I said before when its my turn to do Thanksgiving I rent a condo at Port A and I do thanksgiving there. I will not call it a vacation, its just a get out from home.

Irenera for crying out loud, please look at the post right before it. Of course I know what blackened fish is. I even said where my favorite places were to have it. I am not judging nor do I have to look it up. Furthermore, just because some of us don't live by the coast or near the coast is no reason for us to not eat fish. Because of my health issues, seafood is a staple in our home...I don't have to F-I-N-D it on the net.

saladas or ensaladas or salade which ever you like
afrado/alfredo which ever you want if you know what fettuccine alfredo is. Freedie sauace/sauce, you free the fettuccine from alfredo and use something else. blacken fish, ingredients us to blacken fish, such as oregano,parsley,basely/basal. You do not burn the fish. You fine it alot is in Louisiana and almost all coastal areas. Here I see it on places where they serve fish. and wala

This friend of mine never married. When we were in college she fell in love with the president of the student body. He was hot!hot! you know he wasn't going to even give her the time of the day. She even said him or nothing. She end up witih nothing ....But she dated different guys on and off like all of us. We were in college and it was 20 of us that hang out. I was the crazy one and had parties at my appartment. We all started getting married one by one except her, we all still keep in touch. We all meet at the river walk for dinner when they light up for xmas holidays. We talk on the phone, we invited each other on childrens graduations and college and weddings. As for desperate, I guess some women just looking for companion but I guess my friend was looking for the whole enchilada.

I told her that when I was at Tijuana,Mx, my friend and I pass this stand that had a big,big jar of viagra. I mention to my friend, hey if we buy this jar, we can make money in USA. I told her I might be going to EP and I could fine it cheaper, she said its not viagra, his pills started with a C but she couldin't remember the name. Poor girl, still going strong and end up with this. Just shoot that poor guy and get him of his mistery. Que mala:eek:

MMMMMM Los 7 machos. I just take los 7 machos and forget the tonic:D ha!ha!ha!
I see life brings us so many things and I wonder how we all cope in different situtations.
Last night conversations, with a 68yr femal friend who is from Mexico married a man from EP who grew up on my neighborhood. Divorce 3yrs.
Likes to go to dance halls and meet men. She met this man who is 55yr.
She call me to give me the great news. She finally did it. She use to tell me all about this man and how she unbutton the top button of his shirt to see his hairy chest. MMMMMMM I will ask her well why don't you just take him home and undo all of the button and see everything. She will say no, no quero andar de voca en voca ha!ha!ha! . "Ok, Susie Q, help me with my spanish."
Se estaba asiendo la pretada, I laugh, G/F at your age who cares just get it when you can. Last night she calls, her tone of voice tells me she was glowing. This man is from Mexico, lives in a one room appartment. sleeps in the floor. She made him buy a mattress and she help clean his place. She said we were like pigs on a pig pen, he has no airconditioning and gave me more details that I wouldn't say, but I just couldn't help laughing. No pill for this 55yr old, with a 68yr old lady.

I wish! I have very few friends. The ones that I do have are too tired at the end of the day to do anything but sleep. I have to admit I do that also. Every now and then I do get on the phone with them but the conversations are always short, sweet and to the point. Hello, how are you?, good, and goodbye.

G/F you are missing alot. I have co-worker friends that work on other campus some I travel with and sometimes the same ones cannot go others go. Some I go for happy hr. margaritas and free supper. Some set me up with blind dates which I never like. Then we come home and do the pillow talk for hours. Some nights I don't get a call so I make that call then here we go all over again. Sometimes its a quite night and I watch TV.:(

Yeah I know, but remember I have a young child at home and I work by myself. There is not a lot of time to spare between work and family. Besides, my friends have the same dilemas. Kids, husbands, and jobs. When we do get together though, we have a blast. Margaritas....yummmmm that sounds delightful!

Leaving for the island this week and can't wait to get on the road! Found a place in McAllen where we'll stay and then drive to the island. It's not too far. It's called Casa Palma (s) I won't be doing laundry, doing dishes or cooking for anybody!
Still wish it was the Bahamas like Norma Rae. Oh well....la vida de pobres y que le hacemos.
Cool zunezune. Have a nice trip and bring us all something!;)

Pues I'm back and no chones! You can have the bad memories that are still lingering in my mind....How I wish I could have been anywhere but there. I had the trip that came straight from the bowels of the earth...I guess I'll need to start posting in the depressed thread.
I did get a chance to spend the night in EP though. Saw some of the new stuff but only what I saw on El Indio Highway, Bibb, and from there to 57. Lots of changes. What I saw in the predawn hours looked really nice:) . The woman at Cartender was horrible though!

You know, you're absolutely right. When my grandmother passed away, we were all getting along (all 100 + of us) because nothing had to do with individuals. It was all about consoling each other and then going home right away. Too bad it has to be that way.:(
It is just amazing how one person can impact a whole family.
