I am an hispanic person who currently lives in Austin. One of the reasons I have never come back to Eagle Pass was because of it's lack of diversity. My question is, are people of other colors(White, Black, Orientels) finally coming to Eagle Pass to come and live? If Eagle Pass is ever to become a properous city, it must open its doors to people who aren't just Hispanic.

I don't think Eagle Pass has the doors closed for other cultures, it's all about location. We're the arm pit of Southern Texas... hidden so far down south, that I really don't think people know about old EP  ... I remember when I lived down there, (back in the 80's), there was one African American family... ONE!! You know but that's a really good question..that would need some researching... Living in Minnesota, I was amazed at all the diversity there is in a "Caucasion" state. I just heard the news that statistics show that Hispanics will be the leading majority minority up here... it's a beautiful thing to live amongst other cultures....yall don't know what you're missing until you expierience it....
Intresting topic... :D

I am just curious, how old are you?
Hispanics come in all colors (white, black, orientals)
When Eagle Pass was founded the majority of the residents in E.P. were
Caucasian families.

I'm 29.
I have met some Caucasians here in Eagle Pass that are necessarily ranchers.
Take for instance, our mayor is Caucasian, the owners of our local paper, the admistrative assistant to the County Judge, Border Patrol agents, the local librarian, teachers, etc. I forgot that the City has just hired a Caucasian to run the Parks and Recreation and she comes from Austin.
Here in Eagle Pass we have people from many cultures

You're right...and forgive me for generalizing...plus the fact that... I haven't been to EP in 2 years, sometimes it just seemed as they were a part of us... meaning, we were all the same race...I never saw them as anything other than Mexican... call me crazy.. and naive.... but that was a while ago...I guess its more predominant for me here in Minnesota...... where you can really tell the difference....

My personal opinion I think that the 80-90's were better here in Eagle Pass.
Not many things to do but we had more fun. We were more creative than kids nowadays. I remember riding in my bicycle with cousins and friends all over Eagle Pass even going to Piedras Negras.
What do you think?

Pos si tambien..... but loook at all the new restaurants etc... I remember when we didn't have a choice if we wanted to eat out... it was always the same thing... but yea.. it was simpler... we got into trouble less and hung out more with friends and family.. nowadays all these kids wanna do is cause chaos, race, and see who the bigger man is...

Is Eagle Pass going to start bringing in the type of jobs that will bring in Anglos and African-Americans into our community? Such as jobs in the oil industry, casino, or more govt. jobs such as border patrol and customs?

whats your problem alacran62 (WHATEVER THAT IS) are you racist or something towards blacks and whites?! i totally agree with eldude most of the people in this town who are not hispanic have those types of jobs. stop being so ignorant and start accepting other people who are not hispanic in eagle pass.
I dont think the problem is racism, I do see both sides.. but I think having Anglos and Af.Amers and oriental would be more fair for others.. for example in management... management nowadays, is who u know.. and what u do with that will give u the promotions and ******Censored, please refrain from using profanity on Eagle Pass Online. We would like everyone to enjoy the forums including children. Thanks!******, example WALMART/HEB/BANKS/DUNLAPS/JCPENNY, all of them
Im not racist at all, but most of the people here, who have decent jobs dont speak english, and when we get visitors, tourist, who ask questions, or directions, we cant help, because we lack the ENGLISH language.
I am an educated guy, with a degree in business/management/accounting/stylist. I applied in different places, dress to kill for the job... I was told I was over qualified for accounting, for book keeping for management, what is up with that? yet i see someone who didnt go to college or is barely going, with management positions, bank tellers, and who knows what else, its everywhere... We need fairness above all. I could go on and on about it.... But whats the use, thats not changing anything...
So give me a job as a cashier at a corner store, and im happy, is all i can get with a college degree... that plainly sux!

Honestly guys, yall don't know what racism truly is until you move into a town where, they actually don't like you and tell you to your face, you walk into a store and everyone stares at you..... or where their children are not allowed to play with your children because of our race.... or where the Somalians live in one big house, divided into apts., and all work/live in one place, because no one else will hire them or rent out to them, so they'd rather stick together than venture out and be humiliated. I could go on....
Racism is a very sticky issue with me... I've lived it.... don't get me wrong it's getting much better....
Now about Eagle Pass..... yall should do some research as to why there isn't people of other races moving to/living there. And just a note... We don't call people of Asian/Chineese/Japaneese descent Orientals... only material things are called Orientals.. I learned the hard way....
When I lived in EP there wasn't one racist bone in my body... I thought this was the way it was everywhere... everyone being the same...looking the same.. talking the same... boy was I wrong.. but you live and learn... look outside the box....
take care yall

I remember when I lived in EP, whenever I would go out to eat anywhere and someone who was black or white entered the restaurant, all the hispanics in the restaurant gave a mean stare to these people. This was all too common in Eagle Pass establishments. This made me very embarrassed to be an Eagle Passan. It's not just anglos who can be racist. There are many Hispanics in EP are big time bigots. I just hope these people's attitudes will change one day and realize that all humans are all Gods creatures.

I think little by little Eagle Pass will start to move into the mainstream by bringing in more Anglos and blacks to come to live here. We also must start encouraging our non-English speaking citizens to start learning how to speak English so that they can have an easier time of getting a higher paying job. In fact, for those of you who know people who don't speak English in Eagle Pass, there's a man who teaches people English for FREE. He is over at the public library (downstairs) and he, along with other tutors, teach English absolutely free. Trust me, he can turn almost any Spanish speaker into an English speaker. The name of the organization is the Maverick County Literacy Council and just ask for Mr. Eugene Botelho at the Public Library for more info.
Thanks spur for that info... Im sure it could come in handy to those who know and are related to those who dont speak the English language, and above all, its FREE... I didnt know we had that resource here. You learn something everyday.
Now the to racist comment, any amount of biase is biase, any amount of racism is racism... Just like a lil white lie, is a lie no matter how we put, but as some people try and make it sound better, we put them in different categories, white lies, big lies, bad lies... Lies are lies, just as RACISM is RACISM. And there is alot of them in Eagle Pass whether we like it or not. Ive even noticed it between the mexicans from Piedras and the mexicans from here, se tiran uno al otro. Es la misma raza. Un Mexicano es Mexicano aunque lo demuestre o no! AND thats just sick...
I dont see divisions between ourselves, neither white, asian, hispanic or any other. Eagle Pass is just weird, it wasnt like that, that I recall pero oh well. Its not only with our race, but in everyone elses, its all the same, the only difference is the pigmentation of the piel!
Esperamos en lo celestial que alguien dia todo esto cambie para lo mejor...

Hey Minnesota - I know you posed a question regarding my location in MN in another forum, so I'll answer here - I'm in SW MN around Marshall.
A little about my experience with EP - My family and I visit every Christmas. I enjoy the diversity that EP exhibits. Actually, it's not really an issue of diversity, but immersion in a whole other culture that I don't have the opportunity to experience in MN. I'm sure you can relate from the flip-side, Minnesota!
I really don't have a lot to add regarding the Hispanic/non-hispanic issue. After all, what is race? Aren't we all a part of the human race? Ethnicity would be the correct term.
Minnesota, I just wanted to answer your question regarding my location - I'll be looking for that purple pride in EP this winter!
The only kind of people Eagle Pass needs are good hearted ones. They all come in different colors and shapes and alot of them already live there. This black, white, yellow, brown etc. doesn't mean a darn thing. ;)

I think this is an interesting thread since I am white and grew up in EP. I loved growing up there. I only remember one time that I felt I was treated unfairly. I went to a store and wanted a coat. I asked how much it was and one sales lady told another that "for the gringo it is $100." She didn't know that my sister knew spanish. I didn't buy the coat, but I sure wanted it.
In 18 years there that is the only thing I remember about this. My family was always treated wonderfully and I love that I grew up in a different culture.

Come on now! :)
A word of advice...
This is from experience, not something I pulled out of the air. You may not have learned this in college because it's not the sort of thing they teach there.
Here goes:
If you can't get the job you want then make one yourself! Why would you want to sit around and depend on someone else to give you the job you think you deserve?
If you are better than what they are offering then get up and show em' who you are! Get out there and start a business and be self employed!
Don't tell me you can't do it! I am living proof about a thousand times over...
If you want help or advice, I will be happy to help..
I have no rich uncles and the banks never gave me a cent, yet I have been in business and worked for myself more than I have worked for others.. It's not the easy road, just the one I chose and the only way for me!
