Well, it looks like the days of our short Sunday drives may soon become a thing of the past. There's a proposition out there to increase prices eight cents per gallon a year for the next 5 years. The increase is supposed to save lives by covering the repair of the nation's infrastructure. Aging bridges, roads and the like. The blame is placed on our growing population and while that is fodder for a new thread, I'll keep it here. The natural selection process is almost gone. We tend to live longer, we allow more people to cross the borders, and there are just TOO MANY PEOPLE. Now a lot of you can probably argue that it's not true but think about it. Where can you go and not be constantly jostled by hordes of people? How many of you run away to vacation spots where all you see are mountains, valleys or rivers but no people? I do whenever I can. Nos hemos convertido en una nación the super consumidores y no nos damos a basto. Falta espacio, falta aire, y aún así, queremos más. Como decía mi abuelita, ves la situación, y no te hincas.

I don't know. This part of the metroplex is just ridiculous! The more farmlands go away, the more we're going to have to rely on cloned food. The gas thing is the last straw. Someone I know feels that there should be some way to control the population. We are weighing the world down and the more we do, the fewer opportunities our children are going to have as they get older.

I almost had a nervous breakdown yesterday. Gas at $3.51 a gallon. I wish my short little legs could pedal real fast, then I'd ride my bike everywhere. There is so much to do in Arlington. The city would benefit so much.

We are at $3.39. I know it will go even higher cause we keep lining up to fill up.

On another note..I couldn't believe the huge lines at the beverage barn in town:confused:. People were lined up like if they were giving away gas cards.

Beer prices, especially those of specialty beers is going up dramatically. Malt prices are double what they were one year ago and hops prices are 5 times what they were a year ago. On the same note, the increasing fuel prices are increasing everything else. Sam's Club has limited the amount of rice a person can purchase and grocery prices are up about 17%. That's the highest spike since the 1970's.

What are you doing to save on gas? I had a neighbor a couple of years back and they would be in their car driving off every thirty minutes or so. They'd leave, be gone 20 minutes or so, come back and then leave thirty minutes later to do it all over again. I often wondered why they didn't make just one trip. Anyway, do you have any tricks to save on your weekly gas purchases? How much does it take to fill up your gas tank?

catlady

I don't have a car. I had one but it was stolen! It was a little '79 VW Sedan. It was really good for saving gas. But even then, I would walk as much as I could or take public transportation.

Well I never thought I would, but I'll also be taking public transportation. It would cost me way too much to drive to work everyday. Gas prices were a huge factor and so was the traffic, It'll save me a nice chunk of change. When I first got my truck it was about 60 to fill up, its now 73  its killing me......

I have heard from several sources that say that the gas in Mexico well the Roja is the same unleaded that we use here. I have heard that it is imported from the US to Mexico. The reason it is cheaper is because like many other things imported to Mexico is does not have any tax. The regular in Mexico is no good but the 'Roja' is the best over there and is equivalent to our unleaded here in the US. Does anyone know anything about this???

Heard an interview on NPR this morning with Mayor White. Not 100% if that's his name but anyway, he REALLY needs to talk to Mayor Cluck in this part of town. I was pretty impressed with the interview. He was talking about PT in the city and the suburbs and how in the next 3 years or so the city will have some of the most aggressive building in the nation in regard to Public Transportation. Wow! He says that more and more people are using PT in lieu of driving and he also talked about changing zoning laws enacted in the 1930's and 40's that segregated industry, retail and living into a more eco-friendly system. I thought that was pretty cool. A nerd like me would. Especially one that hates driving.

Might as well, it eats the gas like a Doulie. I drive a 02 Chev, silverado 1150 ex/cab. I want to buy the car that looks like a box and keep my truck. But than I am use in not having any bills. It feels good to have a clean record. House and truck are pay off, my bills are just the normal living bills.

Man your sister charged you $80 just to babysit your dogs??? What kinda sister is that? Whatever happened to helping your family out?

No, my sis don't charge me. I gave her $80 to look after my dogs. I am helping family. I am helping her. Everytime I visted I give her money. When she was staying with me found a job , she use to give me $200 month. I didn't wanted for her to pay me, but she said it makes her feel better. So when I viste her I give her money it makes me feel better that I could give her money that she might need. One time she needed w/dryer and I bought her both. Not new, but she have a w/dryer. This is how we help each other. Its always being that way, maybe thats why we really get along .

I don't know who CH is but, but I am taking a guess. PH and CH and the one that use to live on the corner Wecho they all left EP way,way back before I did. Than PH appear back in EP, than an older brother who left EP not long ago, than I heard CH appear. Wecho goes to EP once on a while, young brother goes and visits him. But TM and L, I enjoy talking to those two. Boy they have me laughing. TM that makes sure every dog of the neighborhood disappears. L makes sure all the neighborhood listen to music. EP is boring, but yet I like to listen to their everyday stories. Let me give you a good story. The gas at HEB near my house is $2.59. But even with the gas going down I wouldn't be able to take a road trip. Property taxes almost came to 3,000. In SA all property taxes went high sky. Good thing the money I had on the saving for that purpose was return back after somebody took it out. I still needed a few hundred dollars more. So I am stuck. :( No thanksgiving or xmas for me:mad:

Well I never driven to Rock Port from SA. I use to rent a condo at Port A during Thanksgiving. My daughter and her husband will leave four days before me. They will drive to Rock Port and camp for three days to go fishing. They have a pop-out tent. Then they will drive to Port A. and stay at the condo. I will arrive the following day, on Wednesday with all the food for Thanksgiving. Well I don't do much cooking cus I will buy the turkey and ham from Honey Bake and the rest else where. But the times I have gone fishing at Rock Port its cus I am already at Port A. and I will drive it from there, cross over on the ferry . Not much traffic during that time. Only crazy people like us that just want to go out and breath different air. Tired of staying home, eating and watching the game and more eating. At the coast we eat and walk the beach, play volleyball, hit the swimming pool and the hot tub. We being lucky that the weather have always being in the 80's.

The town I am always scare to drive is through Houston. I drat it, I hate it. In a few weeks we have to go to Shreveport, I think I miss spell it but its on one side of Houston. But we look at the map and I think we can get there and not go through Houston.

Never had problems going to Dallas, but than we just rented a hotel accross from Six Flags long time ago. MMMMMM is six flags in Dallas?

My daughter lives in Red Land Woods, close to Stone Oaks. And yes its far from where I live. I get up at 4:00am. and Leave my house at 4:30. Good thing I don't get traffic around that time. But I get face to face with the 18 Wheelers. I travel 35 going toward Austin than into Anderson Loop going west to 410 going west. Coming back by 6:30pm I hit the traffic. Up to 35 where Austin and San Antonio splits. All the traffic is going toward Austin.

To me spelling or use of words and etc, it doesn't matter anymore. I am not in school. We learn it we use it y ya. I don't even bother to use the spell check. I also notice when my daughter went to college everything was done manual and have to use their brain and her job as an RN every Pt room has a computer and everything is posted there for next shift or Dr. that comes and check on the Pt. I also seeing they roll a computer to different rooms.

It seem before that they will Wait for somebody to misspell a word or do a mistake, they everybody will jump like third graders. That was funny to me because I saw a lot of mistakes and misspelled words on some of the posting, but It didn't matter to me, I understood what they were trying to say.

I didn't know that there was a check point between Uvalde and Brecksville mmm did I get that one right? It's being 28yrs since i gone to Del Rio from here. Its always EP than Del Rio. Took mom and my sis who looks after my mom to eat at Lubby's headed to EP just as I was getting to my old neighborhod a train almost hit me. Not only that later that evening Evie almost kill me too. I don't know if she notice it, I was coming out from the back of the truck to the pasanger side to get some things out the truck when Evie didn't notice I was coming from the back of the truck into the street. Her car miss me by a foot, I jump backwards. It was her cus she park on ther drive way.  :o

I was wearing light gray warm ups. Was very cold when we left from here and also cold at EP. My fault, we are thoughts as kids never go behind an auto to cross or etc. Boy that train is an hr long wait. The lights did not come on until I was almost crossing and the arm or what ever they call it almost came down on front of hood. I right away reverse before that arm hit the truck. My sis was right behind me on her car, she saw it and right away she also reverse so I could get enough space.

May you all have a happy and save Thanksgiving with family and friends. I finish packing and will be leaving tomorrow afternoon:rolleyes: .

How was your trip to EP? My sis and I end up going toward down town and stop on an open area trying to see where the border fance was. There was a Border Patrol Blazer park there. We talk to him and he told us the fance was father down, cus all we could see was a baseball field. We talk to him for a long time, he show us the camers, which we didn't know we were just under the tall poll where the camers were. Another patrol drove in and he was also disagreeing on the fance which he said makes no sence. Too bad they were too young for us, oh well. NO Sin on looking and dream on:D

I feel the same way. I never got home sick. I was glad I left and now I can only stay two or three days by the third day I am ready to leave. I don't know anybody if I was to ran across somebody, I wouldn't even recognize them. A friend brought me a newspaper clipping of our class reunion I counted 50 people that went, well I only recognize two, one cus her parents still live at our neighborhood and the other because he lives here and he always kept in touch through out the years.

Its not good to have a truck. Everybody wants to borrow your truck to move something to to pick up something.

My sis needed to pick up her son from Freeport,Tx one side of Houston. We decided to go on the side roads instead of going through Houston and back to get to Freeport. We got lost as we did the cut off. My sis was driving and as we were looking at the streets she almost miss a red light when I yell for her to stop and she break. To top it off a cop was just faceing us. The green light turn and she cross the cop turn around an put the lights on her. Darn we are dead, my sis told me her driver lic had expire a few months ago and didn't get a new one cus she needed to take a test, cus her driver Lic is from Flordia and inorder to get Texas Driver Lic required to retake a test.
Plan one, I told my sis, unbutton your shirt and show some clevage, she said girl, I didn't have much from the begaining, nothing is hanging, one night they just disappear.
Plan two, show some leg, she said, I lost so much weight, that the only thing I have is skin that is just holding by a string to the bone.
Plan three, I didn't have much time to think, the cop was already at the window. My sis told him her driver lic had expired, by that time I had my driver Lic and insurance on my hand and I pass it on to the cop and told him I let her drive cus I was feeling sick. He said do you need to go to the hospital I said no, he look at me and I told him I have diarrhea and taking Imodium:eek: thats all I could think off. I told him, just give us a warning and I will drive. He said let me go and check first, he went to his car computer and check "me out." I haven't had a ticket for the past 20yrs, nor car accidents either. TG, he said, I am not going to give you a ticket nor you for leting her drive without a Lic. He gave us direction and we took off. We had to stop on the first gas station to laugh it out:D As we kept on driving we didn't know what we were getting into. It was about 90 miles of alot of small towns. Speed limit 65 miles for 15minutes than it turn to 55 miles, for another 10 minutes than it turn to 45 miles for another 10 minutes, than 35 miles for 10 minutes. Than we enter another little town and it will start all over again. We finally got there. But my sis and her son smokes, her son is a chain smoker, I was really getting sick. Plus he is a diabetic, bathroom breaks every half an hr. Which it got to be my heaven to breath air. Now going to EP, my nephew had to drive with me, cus he needed space to strach his legs and my sis car which she drove did not have enough leg space. I just said, ok God give me strength. We got to EP on Saturday and I had to spent the night. They both smoke inside the house, I couldn't breath at night, I had to put two sets of blanks over my head to filter out the smoke.
I sometimes smoke one or two a day, I don't smoke when I baby sit, cus they breath in whats on your clothing. I don't smoke inside nor let anybody smoke inside. I know I need to cut this crap, when my sis comes over I'll pick it up. I see my nephew he is in his late 30's he use to be a handsome young man, between the diabetes and smoking, and he don't take care of himself, he looks like if he is on his 70's. When we got to EP we were told my older brother is not doing so well, in the hospital and they found cancer on the liver. Plus he has being on a Veg. state for many years. Heart congestion failure. So this was my road trip, a might mare on emstreet.:(

Diabeties and Cancer is the in disease for all kind of race young and old. Before they use to say if it runs on your family you are going to get it. It not true for all. There are facts that some get cancer or diabeties with out a family history. They found out that we all carry a cancer cell, but some do develp cancer and others don't. It will develop when a person is at its weakest point of health.

Thats why I want to buy a small SUV, but I have to wait until things get better. I don't want to get myself into a 4 or 5 yr committment when I don't know what the future might bring.

Sorry to hear about your older brother being so sick! I will keep him in my prayers.
As for your sister and nephew, they were riding in your truck so you had every right to say: No smoking! If your nephew has diabetes and smokes, it just shows how little he cares about his health.
I stopped smoking when I found out I was pregnant with my oldest. I would smoke an ocassional cig at a party but for the last few years, I haven't even done that! My youngest has asthma and is extremely sensitive to cigarette smoke so if we have guests or a party, anyone who wants to smoke has to go out in the yard! No exceptions!

Thank you. my brother being sick form many years. He had a stroke, but gets me is that my sister in law did not take him to physical therapy nor speech tharapy. Some people are naive or just plan stupit. So he never walk nor speak. I think what keeps my mom alive is just to give us hell. My sis at Del Rio was looking after her for a while and when the case worker comes and check on her she will say like I went to San Antonio to vist my other daughter and I had to sleep on the floor and she will serve me food on the dog bowl:eek: She will say things that I don't know where she gets all thoes ideas. My sis will call me and we will laugh at the things my mom will think off. I will talk to mom and she will say "I did't say that", She will make my sis drive her to San Antonio cus she wanted to buy some clothing. When she was here she said take me where I can fine a sweater for $1.00:eek: She did not wanted to go the the Mall, so I decided to take her to the good will, she came out screeming cus the sweaters were no cheaper than $8.00 :D So we got her routine, not that she needed any sweaters nor clothing, she just want to do some traveling. I almost fainted when I saw him, he is one year younger than Link. But thats what happen with diabetes and not taking care of himself.
I enjoy my few hrs stay at EP, I talk to Vita,Turi and their father, and of course the H. brothers that run around the neighborhood to know is coming or going. EP is so relaxing, lay back. But if I would stay any longer I will get boring.

Can you belive driving from Del Rio to San Antonio to buy a sweater for $1.00 and how much on gas and food?
Not to justify her actions but you should talk to her doctor about this. She may be developing senile dementia. My mom was always difficult but then she began to get difficult AND weird! One day she called me on the phone to say that my dad had a bad cold and wanted to go to work, so could my ex (who's a dr) come and talk him into staying in bed. Well, my dad had been dead for 23 years! And my dad was something she didn't jike about. When we got to her house, she said my dad had gone to work anyway. I tried to convince her that he was dead but she wouldn't believe me. Next day, I called and asked how my dad was and she didn't remember anything about the day before!
Senile dementia creeps up on them and then suddenly they are more out of it than aware. It's a very difficult disease but there are a few things that can be done for them.

She has both for a long time. We learn not to take things personal but some times the three sis that look after her can't take it for so long. So is six months each one. One sis got so sick that she had to go to the hospital end up with high blood presure and stress. So she call the other sis and she left to Florida where she has her family. My sis from Del Rio took over , well she barely made five months and begain to have health problems so she call the other sis to take over. Well its going to get to a point that she must be put on a nurseing home. When a family memeber takes care of another family member its hard cus its a 24hr care.

It is very hard! We looked at some nursing homes but I just couldn't do it. I was working full time, had a new baby and fortunately a very good teen ager. We got a care taker. She was very good to my mom and she was less expensive than a nurse or a nursing home. She would leave an hour after I got home.
My mom had some really awful hallucinations but we got a psychiatrist who specialized in geriatric care and he gave her some medicines that stopped the hallucinations.
In the end, they become little children. It's as if life had come full circle and you become the parent.
Truly, my heart goes out to you.

I always talk to my sis about it. What are we going to do when we become to that stage or age which ever comes first. See most of use have one or two children. So we decided appartments for seniors than depending on our health it will be nurseing home.:o We don't want our children to go through what we gone through with mom. I just pray I wouldn't get sick and live to long.

Yes, but it doesn't have to be that way. My paternal grandmom died at 90 and she was perfectly clear-headed. My daughters' grandad (paternal) died at 84 and he was fine mentally.
I've read that surfing the internet, doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles keeps your brain helathy. So, I think we have to do as much as we can and hope for the best.

You're right, my grandmother died at 95 but by then she was not as clearheaded as she was at 93. Personally, I think natural selection is best. With an ever growing geriatric population and birth rates going up in many areas, the world cannot naturally sustain us. This is why we rely on chemicals and more chemicals to make everything from chickens to corn grow faster, bigger and better. Then we have the fallout from that. It becomes a catch-22.

Since my daughter lives more than a few miles away from me, it feels like a road trip. Today coming from her house at 5pm faceing the time of traffic. There is a stop sine coming out the subdivison which I stop. There is a two line coming from left which is a one way road. The cars pass and I made my right and got on the left lain since forther down I have to make another left on the light to go into 1604. Well I saw a white car coming fast right beind me and wonder if he was going to slow down. About 24ft away from me I head the car breaking and he wasn't slowing down so I step on the gas and try to get father away from the car. I knew if he hit be on the back, he is going to turn/flip over or put me out of control. I might even roll over myself. See 1604 is on the bottom of the road where we were and that traffic goes the opposit direction. Its about maybe 8ft down. I was thinking fast, so if he hits me fast I will have to turn my wheel to the right taking me to the right lain and praying there will be no cars. I new there is a light coming up so I couldn't go that fast. The car reach me and hit me on the back, I head a big bang and it just move the truck a little. I slow down a little at a time, I did not wanted to brack right away and put me to a spin. I stop maybe 25 ft away from the car. I got out the truck and look at the rear bumper not a scrach on sight. I wonder if the car got all mass up, cus it was a new modle and it only had a fiber glass spoiler on the front, compare to a big bumper on the truck. The guy got out the car and he look at his car and from where I was standing I see his car was in tact. I didn't see any parts hanging or flying around. He walk toward me and said if I was ok, I said yes, and I told him my truck had no damage and he came and look at it and he said that his car didn't suffer any damage either. We went our marry way. Well two blocks from my house I had the green light so I pass going stright, than this stupit person made a left trun on the green. I almost hit him, yes, the rules are that you can make that turn if no cars are coming, or you can waite for the turning light. Man, I threw the finger and twisty at him, it was a very old truck, I bet he didn't even had insurance. I didn't move the truck all day today. I bet that guy on the white car was on the phone. How can you not see such a big truck infront of you. And to think that I just put new brakes last week:rolleyes:

So I took a road trip. We went to Eagle Pass on the 15th and stayed for a few days. I tried to meet up with the first lady but as usual something got in the way. I did get a chance to chat with her a little. Wow, is EP changed! Went to both Wal-Mart and H.E. B. to run errands for my mom and it's like culture shock. Habit makes me ask for things in English and it never occured to me to speak Spanish. Anyway, I asked where something was and you would have thought I was speaking Swahili. How funny! We had a good time. Just sorry I missed the first lady.

Anyway maybe next time we can get together.

I can understand that, as many times I gone to EP, I haven't make it to the new Casino. As for the English/Spanish for the people that live outside EP and the Spanish lanuage is hardly use I fine it hard to fine the words on Spanish. So when we go out to eat, I just go by numbers 1,2 etc. When I go and buy something if I can't fine it, I will not buy it, cus I learn not to ask. One time I went to Eagle Lumber and was looking for a vent that goes on the washing machine. Well if you are not a local forget it in getting help. Everybody knows everybody and are helping them and talking about anything else and here I was. I will ask for help and they look at me and go and help somebody else. Well, I smell my under arms, no they don't smell, I check my beath, no It was ok, maybe cus I wasn't wearing high hill shoes, or dress like if I was going to a wedding. So like you, just to to HEB or maybe take mom to eat out. That is my outing in EP, this is a person that is not going to spent my money where I am not welcome. It used to piss me off, hey, I was born and raise there and most of the people living in EP are from Mexico and they took over. People are so different now than when I use to live there. Well I learn not to get piss, its there town now, its there time, there life, mine is over and out from EP.

I don't mind if the sales person speaks Spanish or English, what I hate is when they switch on you in the middle of the conversation. If you want to speak Spanish stick with it same for English, just don't switch back and forth that irritates the hell out of me.

Are you familiar with spanish dinosaur books? He wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up. I don't know how he is going to survive but for now that is his desire. He has about every nonfiction dinosaur book. It is amazing the stuff I learn from him and he is only 8.

I will research your suggestion. Thank you. His birthday is coming up in May so I have enough time to search.:)

The series of DVD's goes from The Big Bang to The Cosmic Calendar and talks about dinosaurs and such, too. There was also a BBC series called something like: Walking with Dinosaurs that was WAAAAAY cool, because it would have this guy talking about different types of dinos and they had great FX so it looked like he was really with the dinosaurs! Very cool!

Went to Dallas a couple of weekends ago and I realized how much I miss it. Zun if you ever go to Frisco stop by Blue Mesa for lunch or dinner. They still have the same great food. I love their Yam chips.

I really wanted to stop by the Spring Creek BarBQ but, I couldn't fit more food. It leaves Bill Millers in the dust.

We went to McKinney and checked out their museum. I can't believe all the time we lived close to the area and never checked it out. It was fun. They have a trail for walking but, 5 feet into the walk and we got attacked by mosquitos so we didn't finish the trail. I guess you can say we didn't start.

Just got back from EP. It was a nice weather, cloudy and cool days. It rain a little last night. I can say, Stock dale restaurant had improve allot. Maybe somebody is reading our comments. A lady got a trade and several plates and was getting mom food while my sis wheel her around so she could choose what she wanted. She kept coming and refilling our ice tea. Guess what she was speaking English. I can give them the Blue Plate. Thank Stock dale for good service. And thanks to the young man that brought the rib's when they were done.
I look at all the damage the flood did. Well four houses that I know of had sewage damage. They had to heat up the water and take a bath with a bucket. Mom's house has major problems cus her floors are cement and the sewage run underneath the house. They have to put a new line and rerouted. I saw allot of erosion on some of the back yards around 2ft and some areas up to 4ft. The arroyo lost some of the walls, and some of the stones they had put with cement. In other words the city have to redo some parts. The flood dump a lot of stones and big rocks at my sis yard. She found a fossil. It looks like a toe with a big nail 4 inches long with the skin pull over. In the middle you can see the bone structure. I had to belong to a big animal. But we don't know any animal that would gave something like that. The fossil is already has turn into rock or stone. Its not like a regular stone in the middle you can the the bone, like when you cut a bone in half you see, the bone inside of the bone. What I saw way on the corner, somebody build a nice two story house. They build it a little higher. But I was wondering who in the world will build a nice house in the middle of the flooding area. The water is very strong. One day a strong flood is going to sit the house down and if that house is move by the water, its going to take the other houses next to it. Oh, well...Im sure they have to pay pretty cent on flood insurance. All in all I had a good time, didn't get to see Evie.

We had a pretty busy weekend. We went to the homecoming game. We missed the parade cause we were just too tired. We then went to celebrate my neighbor's party at Incredible pizza. After that we came back to town straight to the concert. Texmaniacs played and then Gabe Garcia finished the night. We all had bad allergies to the weather so we were just trying to hang on. It was fun but, I wish we were all feeling better. I saw the car show in town but, we were more excited to hang out at the fundraiser. I heard that BBQ place did great in some competition.
