Maybe you could consider Isidro and Timoteo Garza as well know in Texas. Isidro of course was the guy who controlled the Casino until the Kickapoo rightfully overthrew him. He also ran for US Congress vs. Henry Bonilla, and lost. His Timo, is currently serving out his term as the rep from District 80. There's some guy whose last name is Farias from EP, and is an actor who has had small parts in movies. I believe he came out in that boxing movie with Jimmy Smits, and some other notable movie.

Eldude,
There was a guy named Bibb. I don't much about him. I believe he was a teacher. Then there was a gentleman named Trevino who became the Mayor of Eagle Pass. We Also had an Escontrias who became a politian and went to congress or something like that. But the really most famous of all was a man out of the 1800's.

There has probably been many people coming out of Eagle Pass who we could consider great or successful. One dude stands way out there. His name? JOSE VASCONCELOS.

Now I don't know if you could consider him a "true" Eagle Passan. I mean I don't know if this dude bled Orange and White like many of us did. He wasn't born there. He wasn't even from Texas. And I don't know if he gradutated from E.P. High. At any rate, it is said he lived and attended school in Eagle Pass, Texas.

He grew up to be a revolutionary of sorts. He was an educator, a writer, a politician, a philosopher with a law degree and all. He served on a number of very important posts in Mexican Gvernment back in the day. And he even ran for President. He lost though.

I believe he was one of the few people that have really cared for the welfare of Mexico, and in particular for the indigenous populations. He changed many education policies and methods and later wrote several books. He supposedly did alot of neat things for Mexico. Do we have any buddies from Old Mexico that could varify this? I mean did he really do all these neat things BACK IN THE DAY?

Many people of Aztlan remember him today because he coined the phrase, "RAZA DE BRONCE"----referring to the MESTIZO and Indian people (who makeup the great majority of the Mexican population today) and who were created by the mixture of Spanish and Indian blood. To the uninformed Aztlan refers to "the land to the North, from where our people came". That land is now known as the land north of the Rio Grande and the Great Southwest.

Vasconcelos gave artists the idea for drawing the three faced (faces) individual. That one seen in Chicano and Mexican art. I don't know what it's called but it represented the face or psych of people in modern Mexico "in the making" during his life time. I believe San Diego State University used to have it(the little drawing) on there letterhead stationary because their mascot is THE AZTECS.

Maybe Mexico is still "in the making" today although many argue Mexico is becoming "more Indian" than anything else and that it will never reach the goal of the past, which was to make Mexico as Lilly White and as European as possible. (who knows maybe it will still happen. Look at modern T.V., the current President, etc.)

If JOSE VASCONCELOS really attended school in Eagle Pass, then he would be one of the most famous people out of that town in a long time. But he is gone and dead now. And since he went back to live, work and die in Mexico, we have to give our schools names such as S.C. Smith, Robert E. Lee and Winn High School. I guess?

There is a book written by Gabriella de Beer. The title of the book is JOSE VASCONCELOS AND HIS WORLD. It was published in 1966. Also, there is a biography done by John Herbert Haddox entitled, VASCONCELOS OF MEXICO.
There could be other more important people from Eagle Pass.

I heard RUDY BOWLES was a successful basketball athlete at TEXAS A & I. Also, a CASTILLON who had grandparents in Eagle Pass went on to become the first Hispanic General (or one of the first) in the United States Army. I don't know if he went to schools in Eagle Pass. I know his little brother and sisters did. He's still alive. I believe he went as far as three stars.

Well, I'm only sharing my thoughts. Those are the only FAMOUS people I know.
HEY AND WHAT ABOUT LADIES? I wonder......?

Good luck ELDUDE

Rudy Bowles did play basketball, but it was at southwest Texas State. So did Jerry Sanderlin, who played basketball at SWT. Has anyone else from EP ever been in college athletics? i know some were close to playing college football (Roger Surita, David Zapata) but didn't have the grades. Oh year, Surita's dad was a QB for the southwestern Louisiana Ragin Cajins in the 70's. He was one of EP's and the Ragin Cajins' best players. Also, I believe that Polo Moncada, a catcher in 60's or 50's, suited up in a couple of games with the Baltimore Orioles.

Thanks for that list nyc. It's great to see that Eagle Pass has had some notable figures around the country, especially with CNN and the White House having EP alums play a big part in their operations. Also, former EP alum Jaime Chahin is the Dean of applied arts at Texas State University. Mr. Ricardo Calderon is also a well known figure amongst people all over Texas. He was President of TAMMAC, which is a influential Hispanic chamber of commerce association. He also has done so many things for EP, such as creating a positive newspaper, creating the Big Buck contest, and a lot more.
