Main Street Project

Does anyone here have any info on that main street project that Del Rio was working on? I heard that they wanted to make it into a 6th Street type of atmosphere.

the only thing ive heard is two restaurants are moving into downtown, dont know which ones though. they have been workin on that main street project for a while . they are also workin on commercializing the creekwalk. would be cool if these plans go through.

The Texas Main Street Program, part of the Texas Historical Commission's Community Heritage Development Division, helps Texas Cities revitalize their historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts by utilizing preservation and economic development strategies. Del Rio is a proud Texas Main Street City since 2002.

There are numerous cities through out the state of Texas that have been selected to be on the Main Street Program. The purpose of the program is to restore these cities downtown areas or commercial districts.

The state provides assistance to these cities in different ways. A Local Entrepreneur in Del Rio bought an entire block of Buildings on Main Street and has been restoring all of the buildings for some time now. I hear there is going to be a New Restaurant as well. Yet It will be a nice sit and dine restaurant similar to Avanti's except I am not sure what type of food they will be serving.

Del Rio Downtown is really looking good. Compared to the way it did before the city got into this Program. With the help of the Business people in Del Rio the Mayor, The City Council and the Main Street Coordinator and the State Architects that help redesign buildings that want to be restored they have really gone a long way. Downtown still needs some improvements but the City has done enough for anyone can see a major change. Just 2 years in the Program I am sure within the next few years Downtown Del Rio will really be something.

As for Downtown Del Rio becoming the next 6th Street. I really doubt that would happen. That's not what the City has on mind on doing. The City wants to Make Downtown a happening Place just like it was in the 50's 60's & 70's.

Besides there are a lot of really nice residential homes in Downtown. I'm sure non of the people that live there would want Main Street to become a Party Street.

So, I guess they want to make the creekwalk into a River Walk style attraction? What kind of plans do they have for the creekwalk? If Del Rio wants to maintain it's Continental Airline service, then they'd better turn into a major tourist attraction. Del Rio does have the tools to make it into a major tourist attraction. They have that Main Street Project, Amistad Lake, which I believe is getting pretty close to being full, Ciudad Acuna and it's nightclubs, and that creekwalk. And of course, there's the Casino in Eagle Pass.

The Air Line Service is a risk the City is willing to Take. The city and it's Economic Developers feel that is it the Best Thing that can happen to the City of Del Rio in order for it to continue to Grow.

Del Rio does have Lake Amistad which is a major tourist attract not only in Del Rio but Southwest Texas.

Ciudad Acuna is another tourist attraction for Del Rio. So many people come to Del Rio just for the Night Clubs in Mexico.

Future Pilots and Family and Friends from Laughlin AFB will be able to Fly into Del Rio now instead of having to Fly to San Antonio and then Drive 3 Hours to Del Rio.

Eagle Pass will also help out in a way. The casino is going to be a big hit with Gamblers here in the State of Texas. For Eagle Pass to be the only city in the State of Texas to have a Casino. People will be able to fly to Del Rio then drive to Eagle Pass. The only worry I get from Eagle Pass Helping the Del Rio Air Line Service. Is that I feel that the Casino is not advertising as much as it should.

When I meet people hours of EP they either know or have been to the casino. Maybe they are not advertising in the area but are somewhere else. Who knows?
