View Full Version : My Visit To Ep
I just came back from EP. I enjoyed spending time with my family. I went out to do errands and the town keeps growing. Maybe with new businesses in town they will generate enough sales tax money and use it to beautify the town. It would be nice if the city would make more attractive when you come in from Uvalde and La Pryor. It is such a turn off to see that entry way look so unattractive.
I see what you guys meant about BIBB St. what a mess! It still looks the same as last time when I went down in January. They need to hire a construction crew to work day and another at night to get that street going. Who wants to even go to wal-mart or the post office in that mess? yuk! I feel bad for those who have to deal with it everyday to get back and forth to school, work or errands.
The lake, what's with all the grass in the water. There are more weeds than water in that lake. Should I write to the city or the county? Humm....I might have time in my hands to do both. Anyone here care about the lake so we can bug them to pretty it up?

I agree with you. I too visit in December when they began the reconstruction on Bibb St. I recently went back to Eagle Pass and saw that they were not too far from when they started. I figure they still have a year or more to go before they complete the project. I am disappointed with the city and county for their lack of persuasion towards the construction crew or when negotiating the contract for renovation of the road. I am a former resident and plan to someday return to the city when the economy improves. The lake is another of the many issues that I have with the government body in the city and county. For a while while I was there they started to maintain it. It was nice I was even using it for recreation and my physical regiment but when I returned this Oct and I too saw the out of control grass in the lake and out of it. I am also in auh because of how long it is taking them to initiate the construction of the multilane loop to facilitate the move of the heavy trailers crossing to Mexico. As I know it they have been thowing this idea for five years or more. If someone has an issue and wants to bring it to the city or countys' attention, count me in. I will speak out with you.
I sent an email to the mayor but, I guess he is busy. I haven't heard from him.

Mr. Aranda, we would appreciate a response to any future projects for our county lake!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know that your reputation status is doing well but please don't have too much hot air  for ignoring people's concerns/questions, since it is us the voters who gave you that opportunity to be in your "throne"
If there are none at this time don't be afraid and speak with the truth. ;)

POLITICIANS WILL BE 'POLITICIANS' IN EP. IT SEEMS LIKE THERES NO CHANGING THEIR WILD AND WICKED WAYS OF CONDUCTING BUSINESS . THERES 2 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THEM,, 1- PUTOS 2- BORRACHOS :D
I am here in EP, and Bibb St. is getting better. We were going to Walmart the other day and can someone tell me who decided to put all those white dots in the intersection of main and bibb? the same thing on the intersection of bibb and el indio? It just doesn't make sense to me. Anyway, the good thing is that things are coming along.
P.S. For the first time I was able to shop at HEB without being pushed or hit with a cart. I never thought I'd see the day and that should go on record. lol. I guess they finally made the stores big enough to accomodate alot of people or was it cause it was the end of the month? I'll I know was that I was able to shop with ease.
those white things, im not sure why they used tho, prolly just to give the traffic and avoid some accidents.. some people can be really stupid and not stay on their lane... lol..
As for HEB, yeah its more roomy, which is wonderful... I really hate walking behind someone and they decide to stop in the middle of the Isle to talk with someone coming down. Then u say excuse me, and they dont even hear u...
BTW, well hope ur visit to EAGLE PASS turns out great...!!!
Thanks, Rene. So far I have enjoyed my time here.
Did anyone go to the Applebee's Grand Opening? We have so many around here that I didn't go. If you did how was it?
I am in Eagle Pass visiting my family and took a ride around town. It is really nice to see so many new businesses and buildings going up. That IBC bank on Main St looks huge. It almost doesn't look like Eagle Pass anymore.

The IBC bank will probably have nice offices for lawyers to rent or other big money people in Eagle Pass to have offices or insurance companies.
My sister told me that most likely Bibb street has to be redone entirely, they did it wrong. It took a lot of time to get it done the first time but it was wrong. I still remember I believe when they work on Ceylon st. I heard that it took long because the company that was working on it had gotten another deal that they had to build an airstrip for some Sillycon valley executive's ranch in Maverick county. It was more important work for them then the people of EP street. I feel that if the same company was hired over and over to do city streets, I believe that there is some thing going on there to hire the same company over and over.
Eagletx21
05-30-2004, 08:23 PM
Well exactly how big is this IBC Bank I keep hearing about? From the sound of it I am guessing pretty big. Is it more then one story tall?
They are also building one in Del Rio but first they have to destroy some existing buildings that are standing where the soon to be IBC Bank will be on.
I also read that EP is getting a lot of Banks. Same thing is happening in Del Rio The newest Bank we got is IBC but all the other banks that have been in Del Rio for some time are building new locations through out town. I wonder if this is a thing that is happening in all Border Towns?
<_<
I saw the bank at night, correct me if I am wrong but, it looks like a 2 story building.
I just came back from EP a few days ago and things are looking alot better. That IBC bank came along way from the temp trailer they had. It is looks great. Now if the ugly properties on that main road spruce it up a bit it would make a heck of a difference. It makes me happy to see the new buildings and businesses opening (I hope they all do well). And eventhough, I can find anything I want in Dallas I will try to shop in EP too, to support the businesses.
Also, I checked out Applebee's.. the food and service was not bad at all. Keep up the good work.
If a member here has anything to do with the mall. It needs more than one ATM machine. I don't know how many businesses in the mall don't take debits or visa's but, I had to pay one of them with nothing but coins. Although the cashier was very nice about it, it was a little embarrassing. The atm by the IBC bank in the mall could not read my card.
Do any of you have the same problem at the atm in the mall?

Just registered for this site. It's cool reading all the comments.
I am originally from EP, married now living up north. We'll be going EP this month to visit family and friends.
I need help with some questions.
Where can I take my parents for dinner and make it feel special?
Where can I take my husband to dance to Tejano?
What can my teenage son do for entertainment while we're there?
I would appreciate and input.

The top places to take your places to eat in EP are Charcoal Grill, Don Franco's, and Applebee's. I think the place to go and dance tejano would be at Club 2000. And as for entertainment for your son, I'm sorry to say but there isn't much for him to do. We have Cinema 3 in case he wants to check out a movie. We also have the Mall where he can walk around. There is also a place call the D-Zone, which is an Internet Cafe where he could play computer games or use the Internet. And if you plan to stay at a hotel here, I suggest you stay at either the Hampton Inn or the Holiday Inn Express. Personally, I'd suggest the Hampton.

Where is the Internet Cafe? That would be just perfect.
Don Franco's - is it in EP or Piedras?
Thanks for the info.

The Internet Cafe is right next to the entrance of the old Eagle Pass High School on Bibb street. Don Franco's is right here in Eagle Pass. The location of Don Franco's is on East Garrison Street. It's a two story building that is behind a small car lot. It's really a nice place to eat with great food. I suggest you try Don Franco's out.

Went to EP to Vist my mom and Have my daughters BABY SHOWER. I had a great time. EP sure has changed. Mall is getting better. Happy to see where the new movie theater and ROSS will be at. Wow. BIBB st. is still a headache. HOw long does it take to fix a ST?
Will someone give the out of towners some updates about Ross and the movies?
I took my daughter to a kids birthday party up here in DFW. I met a few parents and I just thought it was funny that one of the parents told me he went to the casino in EP, two weeks ago. How many times does that happen? Just thought I would let you all know. :)

YOU KNOW, I LOVE MY HOME TOWN AND WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL CULTURE. BUT, UNFORTUNETLY E.P IS KNOWN TO BE AN UGLY AND DIRTY TOWN. I DON'T AGREE, BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WHEN THE FIRST THING YOU SEE COMING IN FROM HWY 57 IS THE SHERIFFS DEPT. WAY IN THE BACK WITH NO TYPE OF LANDSCAPING WHAT SO EVER, BUT INSTEAD A BIG HUGE TRASH COMPACTOR IN FRONT OF IT. YOU WOULD THINK THAT IF THEY WERE THINKING IMPRESSIVE AND PRIDE, THEY WOULD'VE BUILT THOSE THINGS THE OTHER WAY AROUND, SHERRIFFS DEPT IN THE FRONT AND TRASH COMPACTOR IN THE BACK. I APOLOGIZE, BUT INCASE I SOUND A LITTLE OFF THE SUBJECT, I JUST JOINED IN WITH E.P ONLINE AND JUST READ SOME OF THE THINGS OTHER PEOPLE SAID.

Yeah, people think Uvalde is a beatiful town, I've lived there and it's really not all that. If you really go around Uvalde, it's not much more different than E. P., but they take a little bit more pride in beautifying the center of town. I don't know if any of you all have been through there lately, but they even added some new "WELCOME TO UVALDE" signs and landscaped a little more. Thats atleast what we need around E.P, a little here and a little there.
Have any of you all ever heard the nicknames some people have for E.P.?
"UGLY PASS", "ILLEGAL PASS", "EAGLE P***"
I have been in EP since the 24th of this month. I am just having a great time and don't when I will be headed back. Mom and Dad's cooking has been hard to resist and I know that when I leave, that will be the end of me eating good food till I come down again. :(
As far as the town goes..it is looking good and the stores have been pretty busy. I have had a hard time trying to find a pair of sneakers for my daughter. Well, I have only tried JC and they have been out of stock for a while (at least her size). Walmart has taken alot of my money. It seems like I always need stuff there no matter what. I, of course had to check out McCoys. It is not as big as the Home Depot I go to but, I will say their customer service is OUTSTANDING. If anyone here works there, I was very impressed.
The Bibb St. has been busy and I have learned to go around it in a way but, it can be inconvenient. I hate being stuck in traffic. I can see why it is taking them forever. Just the other day I saw one guy shoveling, two staring and one sitting on the tractor doing nothing. I can see why the two guys that were just staring were pretty over weight. To those guys I would just say grab a shovel it won't bite you. At that rate heck, it might just take a few more years to get it done. I know it is not news to those that live here and I feel your pain.
I have not gone to Ricks Burgers yet, but I will stop by before I head back, that is for sure. I will try out the other restaurants in town that were suggested. We are planning on heading over to Gubas or whatever it is called tomorrow and see how it is. I was planning to head over to Don Franco's but, I keep hearing their mexican food is not that great. I hope they have more than that on their menu.
Well, I changed my plans about waiting to go to Ricks Burgers after talking about it we got hungry. We went there tonight and the burgers were great as usual. :D

I disagree i was in San Antonio from 1 year and when i came back there was allot of new built houses. Poor montes are getting slashed and bulldozered. :(
The last time I went to EP was in August. There was a few things here and there that were different. I don't know if anyone else gets the feeling that no matter how crappy everyone says EP is, it still gives the sense of being home. The town looks completely different from when I moved out of town but, it still feels the same. Who knows.
Anyway, I spent LOTS of time at home with my parents and siblings which was very enjoyable. I could of stayed longer but, we had to leave. If my siblings read this post "Thank you" for your hospitality. One sibling gives us his bedroom to use, my other brother gives up his computer so my little one could use it and my sister for sharing her bed and time with my daughter. My parents of course, for there sweetness, making coffee and breakfast before we crawled out of bed. My other sibling and family for their thoughtfulness. To sum it all up we had a great time. :D

haven't i heard that there are "watchdog" organizations that put pressure on politicians and government agencies.........or at least let them know what the community wants????????
I heard from a friend in El Valle that they had one in that beautiful Valley. Maybe Eagle Pass needs one or maybe it exists but they also need a new birth of freedom or something.......like a new awareness or some shoot.............
Since you'r so close....why don't you get an organization going that would help....I mean...it would be like....Eagle Passans for a Beautiful City, Americans for Eagle Pass, or something like that. Maybe "Eagles Flying HOme to Rebuild the Nest"
Eagle Pass does need alot of planning and changes....................

Yep,
it will always be 'home'. If you're from Eagle Pass, it will always be home. But we still have to keep our home clean.
Yes there are some people that live poor and filthy and never do the housework. I think we need to keep it clean and organized. So when you go back, tell them about it......"them'...meaning anyone that you know and anyone maybe working in positions that have some influence or close to it.\
Wouldn't you agree? Every person counts................

I worked for a company in Pensacola for several years that participated in a Community Outreach Project. Many of the businesses in Pensacola participated each year and accomplished much for the community. Employees volunteered their time, the company purchased materials, and hardware stores would sell the materials at cost.
We had T-shirts for the volunteers with the names of the sponsors printed on back and a neat design on the front. The local paper gave the event free publicity, naming the sponsors and projects accomplished.
Both years I participated, we painted houses of senior citizens who could not afford to have their homes painted. Cleaning up city parks, fixing broken playground equipment, and repainting are also good projects. Whatever needs to be done.
It is a great way for businesses to give back to the community. Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce could organize and invite local businesses to participate in projects for Eagle Pass.

At the risk of being chastised for talking too much ;), I want to share what our community does, Armadillo. Our United Way kicks off their annual fundraising campaign with a "Community Day of Caring", which sounds fairly similar to your company in Pensacola. We also do projects such as window washing for the elderly, bookkeeping at the local food shelf, ditch cleaning around town, etc. Various employers from around the community agree to let their employees volunteer "with pay" for one afternoon. We also hand out t-shirts and provide a sack lunch donated by our local Subway store. It's a great way to kick off a worthy cause, as well as contribute to the community.

I was suprised to know that the School District where I live, discards the leftover meals. I mean the person that told me said that they trash trays of GOOD FOOD. Does this happen everywhere? anyone know why? Would this be a food safety reason? can't they donate to homeless shelters? I asked her and she said they can't take the food home. They will get fired if they do.

School District's face a really strict heath code that the state sets. Food must be kept warm or at a certain degree or cold depending on what type of food it is.
Once food begins to cool down if it's meant to be warm bacteria begins to grow. Bacteria is killed in foods when it is cooked and when hot foods begin to cool it returns. That is why it is recommend to refrigerate all left overs no more than 2 hours after they have been cooked.
If foods that are meant to be cool like Potato salad or sandwiches begin to warm up because they are exposed to heat then bacteria will begin to grow as well.
That is why school districts throw away all left over's like so many restaurants do as well.
You wouldn't want to get anyone sick from food poising .

I was reading, with interest, the posts regarding leftover food. Here is an idea for the leftovers: I am a Boy Scout leader. At our district's summer camp in South Dakota, we take all the leftovers and put them in a barrel. A local pig farmer picks up the barrel after every meal and feeds the food to his pigs! Any pig farmers in the EP area????

That's not a bad Idea donating the food for the Animals. After all animals have a better immune system then what some humans do. We are so used to eating everything fresh and fully cooked meats and clean drinking water. This would be a great way to feed some Stray Cats or give to some Animals at the city pound.
Here in Del Rio there is a rancher that goes to the Mr. Gatti's and picks up a whole trash can of left over pizza and bread sticks etc all mixed to give as slob for his pigs on his ranch.
I am on my way to EP. Anything new since January I should check out?

and dont 4get to visit ricks burgers. remember... going west on el indio hwy its 2 blocks before u get to the railroad tracks on ur right. hes got rope lights all around.
Thanks, E4ever for the wishes and directions. I just got back from Rick's burgers and it was great. The only thing that changed was the location and the expanded menu. The burgers are still fantastic. I had a burger combo with a huge cup of fresh squeezed lemonade.
Spursfan, we took your advice and checked out the CC Winn area. The hospital is coming along very well. I saw all the new construction around the area. I asked my parents to be our tour guides. They told us all about the new stuff.
Oh, while at Rick's I was talking to him and he said they are planning on selling plates in about two wks. So for all lucky members that live here don't forget to stop by his place. I am sure they will be very tasty since he is a great cook.
I was trying to find the post regarding Ep walmart customer service, but can't remember where to find it. Anyway, I just want to let ya'll know that I had good service while I was there. I got helped by a lady who was restocking the middle aisle, a nice lady at the fabric section who took the time to teach us a thing or two about fabric and a guy at the electronic section. He was the only one who we spoke to in English and responded in Spanish. The customer service at the return counter asked if she could help two other people before me which was annoying but, I accepted. I needed a refund cause someone stole the disc from the air hockey game so we couldn't play. She seemed frustrated at first but, then we laughed cause she couldn't write my number correctly to safe her life.
Just giving credit where credit is due.
Grrrrr..I had a long list of stuff written and somehow lost it.
Anyway excellent service at Peter Pipers toy counter and game area. Little Caesers was fantastic and fast and last but, not least blockbuster has been great. I have been to blockbuster twice already.
And you skipped Ricks Burgers???? Mena how could you???;)
You cross the street from Rick's and on the next block, near the railroad tracks there is a lil trailer. Well their burritos are really good!! If you're still here try them if not try them on your next trip. You won't regret it!!
I didn't skip Rick's place, are you kidding? I have been there a couple of times. There is a new lady helping him out and was nice. I had great service there too. He seems busier.
I went to the Hollywood video thing and they were pretty friendly. We bought a couple of games for the little one.
About the burritos...I haven't tried them. If I get a chance I will. I did try Sarita's tortillas and they were really good. I will buy a lot of the packages and take them home to North Texas.
I also checked out Dunlaps and the two people I asked for help were helpful. No levi's for women only for men incase you want to know.
Here I am in EP enjoying the laid back town. I went to the movies and watched the movie Cars with my family. The tickets were cheap but, we got nailed with the snacks. We had fun anyway.
Let's see where have I gone this time. Twice to Rick's Burgers and it was delicious. We went to that Seafood place La Estrella or estrellita. The service was good and the food wasn't bad. The bill was cheaper than Dallas that's for sure. Basically, all the places I went to have had good service so.. keep up the good work. I plan to go to the museum before the week is over. I wish it wasn't hot at open hours.

Did you get your car fix, I saw you with two men, and didn't want to go over and put my two cents. I am telling you women need to take auto mechanics so that we know when they are f*%# us. They take advanage of women. Even men if they don't know anything about cars. I was force to learn a little cus my husband didn't know beans about auto mechanics, and my son is in the same boat. Darn all I see is the car hood up and about 4 to 5 friends drinking beer and looking under the hood once on the while and noting gets done. I always say it must be a men thing. My husband use to take the car to the auto mechancis and tell them he knew nothing about it, they make sure they will add something extra on the bill.

LOL yes I finally got my car fixed but yesterday I was running a streak of bad, bad luck. Aside from my car breaking down, some MOFO stole my purse with everything in it including the $$ I was going to pay the men who fixed my car. My cell, my glasses, wallet...etc.
They could have taken the money but I sure wish they had returned everything else. But oh well, there is a GOD up there.
So what will make me feel even better is the chile rellenos.;)

I know what you mean, somebody stole my purse some time ago. I had to report and replace Driver Lic, Military Card, Medical Insurance Card, Dental Inc, Employment Identification Card. V.A Card. And call one credit card, good thing I had just finish paying it off by phone and I told them to close the account. My check book was the hardes cus if I was to close the account than my checks will bounce. So I went through all my bill on each envelop I write the check number the amount and the date mail out. I got it to the dot. So they were not able to use my credit card nor checks. I had cold sweat for a while and couldn't sleep. they had my address, good thing I had the house/truck keyes on my pocket.:o But who ever took it got fool cus I was broke, well my purse was broke. I usually write checks for everything. I only carry $5 or $10 and I had bought lunch:p

Maybe next time I will have more time. I was trying to make it so I could buy the tile, they close at 6pm, I did it with plenty of time to kill, but when I got there the tile I like was all gone. :( :o I wanted to start this evening and continue through Spring Break I put in for the whole week. We only get Thurday and Friday or Spring Break. I put in for Monday.Tuesday,Wednesday on personal leave which gives me this week-end til next weekend. I am tired of sleeping on the sofa, I need for my new bedroom set be deliver, but I need to finish the tileing.

I notice EP has the same weather we do here. Cool in the moring and evenings, but maybe 70's or 80's during the day. You wear two set of clothing a day. :D which is very common for Texas when the weather is changing until we get to summer weather, shorts or shorts shorts or nothing at all:p
For the most part yeah, SA does have the same weather.
Sometimes I call home from Dallas and I talk about how cool the weather is, my family says it is real hot EP is.

But the difference between SA and EP heat is that EP heat is very dry, reminds me of old country western movies. My mom used to have watercooler aircondion which use to get me sick. I will lose my voice, end up in emgerency in EP one time and other times I will bearly make it back home and my husband will take me to the emergency room with very high fever. They had to put me a tub of ice to bring my fever down:mad: So I stay away from EP for a long time, until mom gave up on the kind of aircondition. She use to say, you grew up here and now you get sick on cus of ancondition we use all our life

I have made it back to DFW in one piece. Maybe more if you count the missing brain cells and the extra fat cells! I can honestly say I had a great time. Unlike some people who can and will complain about pretty much everything they experience in Eagle Pass, I can't say anything bad about my trip. We were pretty much everywhere. We went into Piedras Negras twice for lunch....and then spent an afternoon seeing old haunts and all the new growth. My eyes were wide open when we drove in and I can't say that the entrance was any better or any worse than some I've seen in the past. I saw places I hadn't seen in 25 years and OMG....for those of you who go back often, live there, or have been there recently, it may not be a big deal, but when I left EP the last piece of civilization on Del Rio Highway was the Double Eagle that was past Las Palmas apartments. Shoot, back then a trip to Elm Creek required a sack lunch in the eyes of a ten year old. Now it's all tied together. Wow! Even a trip down El Indio highway was a stretch and now the city is creeping up to what once was nothing but mesquites, huizaches, and nopales. I slept till 9 every morning and went to bed after midnight. The trip to the mall was even painless! Now that was truly a vacation!

I definitely have to say that I truly enjoyed meeting our forum's very own First Lady and it was wonderful. I am so glad you enjoyed dinner. Too bad we did not have enough time or we probably could have talked more and I could have shown you some of my other culinary talents. Flaco, little chisquis and I really enjoyed your company. Glad you think I can cook too! Hopefully we'll see you soon! It was way too cool to finally meet one of the few that truly get it.

I also had the chance to meet another one of our illustrious members. I won't give that one away but suffice it to say that I went away more than impressed and only wished that I had had more time to spend with a person who in my opinion is truly the genuine article. WOW! I have the feeling we could have talked for hours. Flaco was equally impressed

Hey Chisquis! How was your spring break? Are you back yet? Who hid your keyboard??????;)
"I am back". Was out for a week and I come back, what did I fine? my desk was cover with papers. I work all day yesterday with no lunch break and I just finish. My work is done, my desk is clear, so I can play now.
My spring break, from March 10-18 I work from 8am-3am the next morning take a few hrs of sleep and start again. I was laying the ceramic tile. I was so tired, there were days I was ready to give up. I push myself to the limited. My energy was going so slow, I had to eat a candy or icecream. By Sunday March 18, I seal the tile and wala I was finish. I cut most of my fingers and will burn as I work but I never gave up. My neighbor told me put some bandaids and cut the little pinky from a plastic glove and put it on your fingers it work. The bleeding and the burning was control for a while. But, my reward was looking at my finish accomplishment. My bedroom and bathroom looks like the ones from a magazine. My mattres got deliver yesterday and I finally slept on a bed, for three months I slept on the sofa. The new furnature will be deliver this evening. Then i went and bought a three CD player/radio to go into my intertainment center with the TV, DVD. My bedroom is ready, so tonight I will put in my favorit music Louis Migauel, take a bubble bath with a glass of vino. I can breath now, I hope I don't get myself into another project any time soon.:D

Most of the time my spring break is spring cleaning. Its as bad as a project, I have to go out the upstairs windown to clean the upstairs windows. then I do the down stairs windows. From there I go inside and take all mini blinds and wash them. Start cleaning all the kitchen and it goes on and on. I try not to plan a trip on Spring Break. Flights and hotels are very expensive at that time because of the Spring Breakers, plus the crows and drunks are all out there. My husband and I end up at Acapulco Mx in Spring Break, it was fun at that time of course we were younger. Did you kept up with the news of all the Spring Breakers killings. Some kids from Houston Tx coming from Fiesta Tx, kill themself on the express way, miss curve and flew all the way down. A few more kids local got kill on car accidents and other killings. In Port A, some had car accidents and got burn. Rapes in Port A, and CC. Male rape Male, and Male rape Femal. My God, mothers keep your kids at home, or just plan a picknick or something.
My brother took his family to Fiesta Texas, He said its was an hr to two hrs waiting on the car for parking, the big lines of cars. The rides was a two hr or more waiting. It was very crowed caus the water area was close. I did good by staying home and working on my project:rolleyes:

:D The words just came out as I got into my office. I was running from building to building. It got very dark and some strong cold wind blowing as the rain was comeing down. I could hear the wind from my window next to my desk. By the way I did go home at 1 pm stop at HEB I was in the mood to read something, guess what I was looking for the old True Confession and the Romance. I couldn't fine them, I guess they must have stop publishing them. I went home with some pan de dulce and Mex choloate and put on a move. So here I am back at work.
