Do we have any EPonline members that have served in the military? If yes, what branch, etc..Did you have to serve in a war?

I served almost six years in the Army as a linguist. I volunteered for a couple of assignments in a war zone, but it never materialized. I have not decided yet if that is a good thing or not.

*lol*

Six years is a long time. What made you change careers? And what do you teach now?

I did not enter the military as a career. It was a stepping stone to finish college. I have always wanted to be a teacher. My subject is reading.

HGWT,

Thank you for serving. I know you all sacrifice yourselfs and your family in order to keep us safe. I can't stress enough how Thankful I am to all who have served. I know some people have a hard time talking about war stories. If you wish to do so please go right ahead and spill it here. Again Thanks.

As you stated, some things are meant to be cut loose. Or as Forrest G. would say, "THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT."

Salute to the other veterans on site.

I just found this site and am glad someone finally put one up. I left Eagle Pass and reside in Colorado but I try to stay in touch with what is going on in town when I am away.
I would like to share part of my story to you if you care to read.

I served in the Army five years B) but unfortunaly never saw combat :( . I say unfortunatly because I wanted to be all that I could be and defend this country I call home. I went in to fight but that did not happened while I was in. I enlisted, like many, to see the world, travel, get paid, and earn money for my future education. I am glad to have had the opportunity to do this and if I could I would do it again. I am unable though because of an injury I suffered in Kuwait and Colorado while on deployment. I was in the air defense artillery so we found ourselves on in with the foot soldiers in the front lines. I know some of you might be thinking and wondering if I know what I am writing but I do. I never was involved in a declared combat zone but I was in Kuwait training the Kuwaiti soldiers how to fight after the war of '91. We did have some close calls while in country but nothing to be alarm of. Not anything that would ever make the national news. During peace time that country wa reffered to as a(n) Hazardous Zone but not combat, atleast anymore. Anyways I am proud to have served and hope that more do too. I can only hope that another 9-11 does not happen again, but if it does know and behold we will retaliate faster then we did in 2001.

Thank you Mena and all the others for the support and please don't forget because us veterans can't and won't. Also remind us of it if you see us on the streets, this might seem insignificant to you and the rest of the noncombatants but for the veterans it means the world. The way I can't even begin to explain with words.

holguinh,
Thank you for your words of wisdom. I have never enlisted in the military. So the least I can say is THANKS. I am interested in reading or hearing what goes on in the military because it is our history. Many have said that we don't know how good we have it here, maybe we don't. Who better to tell us than our soldiers and veterans. I know many don't want to relive their experience by talking about it, that is why I say if you want to talk feel free. If you don't it is understood.

I’m in the Military, the Marines too. Have had lots of great times here, but the best is going home to Eagle Pass and Piedras. Left it a couple of years ago but will be back after my four year tour here.

This reply is months old, and I apologiza that I clipped it for brevity, but I felt the need to post a reply.

It is always good to hear from another veteran. Many of us did sacrifice much to serve our nation, but I cannot condone the expression of vengence over justice. Relatiation does not equal justice but vengence. We never captured those responsible for 9/11. The Afghan campain has been pretty much a failure which is why the media only reports about Iraq.

Spent 22 years in the U.S. Army. I enlisted during the Vietnam War, never set foot in the Country now that I look back, I consider myself lucky, might not have made it back. During the Panama Invasion was again lucky not to get deployed. During the Grenada incident only a small contingency was required. During Desert Storm I was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon did not see combat either. I truly believe my Guardian Angel was watching over me during those 22 years. I served in the following units, HHC, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, S. Korea; Headquarter Company, 8th Combat Engineers, 1st Cavaly Division, Ft. Hood; FORCES Command Ft. McPherson, GA; B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 83rd Field Artillery, Babenhausen, Germany; US Forces Support Command, Stuttgart, Germany; B Battery, 4th Battalion, 62d Air Defense Artillery Ft. Bliss; Special Troops Battalion, Ft Hood; Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe, Mons, Belgium; and Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Pentagon. I enjoyed my military career and, made many friends. I met Juaquin Flores Son in Belgium his father used to own flores tv repair on Comal St. I also met Armando Gutierrez (TV Channel 13) daughter in Germany. I consider myself fotunate to be back in Eagle Pass. Historically Eagle Pass sons and daughters have served this country in large numbers and proudly.
