View Full Version : Types of business needed in EP
Would love to hear what types of businesses most of you think would be most welcome in Eagle Pass.
My top picks are all related to the entertainment area. I think Eagle Pass needs more things to do especially for the younger crowd. Plenty of places to drink etc. for the adults but the kids don't seem to have any place to go besides maybe the mall.
Thoughts?
I totally agree witht the fact that Eagle Pass definitely needs to have more places for the younger crowd to hang out, maybe even boost the economy. A few places that I would like to suggest would be a skating ring, a bowling alley, another cheaper movie theater with more cinemas or a hangout where only people 20 and under can go so that there won't be any problems with drinking. [FONT=Arial][SIZE=7]

All of your suggestions are great! Some of the same ideas I had.
An under 21 dance club would be great! I think it would do real well.

Oh come on people be realistic, there is no doubt that we need more entertainment for the younger crowd, but a dance club for teens?!?! Wouldn't really work! Why would a teen go to a no drinking place when they are only minutes from the border!!!! But really you know what we need is a bigger movie theater and a much bigger gym!!! There will always be a problem with drinking as long as we live right on the border!! And a skating ring and bowling alley would be awsome BUT......... :( I don't think there are many people willing to risk an Eagle Pass "lawsuit"!!!

Yes, I know about the drinking issue and Piedras but... I guess I think a non drinking club would work.. Maybe not but it's a thought... Some teens may find it easier to have fun and not have to risk getting caught doing what they are not suppose to (going across the river).
The lawsuit is a problem, certainly one of the things I thought of myself. I guess whoever opens such an establishment will just need a good lawyer :D

[SIZE=7][COLOR=purple] :P Okay so this weekend I took a trip to San Antonio, went to one of the bowling alleys and I had a blast, it was open till 4 am and there were all kinds of people there- from toddlers to teenagers to the much older crowd! I wonder if the people of Eagle Pass are ready to handle that much fun????? <_<

I have just opened a business here in EP that caters to teens and young adults. The name of the business is D-ZONE Cyber Cafe and LAN Center. It is located on 1011 North Bibb St. Suite D. It hours of opperation is Daily from 2PM to 12AM. I opened this business to fill a void here in EP were kids would have a clean friendly and safe place to hang out an play online or on our network of 20 Computers. I have been open for two weeks now and it it has been enthusiasticly accepted by the parants of the kids that have already attended. I would incurage you to come out and bring your child and take a look for your self. Adult suppervision is always availible and kids are incuraged to have fun. We sell sodas and snacks and are currently having Lock-In's every two weeks. We limit the Lock In to 20 attendies so that there is always a computer or gameing station for each and everyone attending. Free drinks and Pizza are provided at the event. Our first Lock In was a big sucsess with 15 kids attending all about the same age 14 and 15. Parents are welcomed to volenteer at the event as well. Our next Lock In is on Sat. March 29th 9PM to 3AM. If you have any questions or would like to know more about D-ZONE feel free to contact us at 830-773-1966.
Thank You,

Eagle Pass needs "Careers" not "Jobs". Jobs come and go, just like the hambuger, chicken and taco places. What Eagle Pass needs is government jobs, be it State or Federal careers. The question is not,"How do we keep our youth entertained?", It's " How do we keep our youth from leaving?". We all talk about how we wish we could leave, but when we do...we come right back. We need to push our elected officials to think of the LONG HAUL, instead of right now, because they're in office.
You have a point but, I don't know what else we need besides US Customs, Border Patrol, Generous Post Office other Law Enforcement Agencies. If we don't have other types of employment or businesses to attract the youth when they are young why would they want to stay anyway. We need something that will make them ask themselves "why would I want to go to Mexico and spend my money there when I have all these places here in town". If they had a choice of things to do, not only would they stay out of trouble but, the tax money would stay in town and more things could be improved.
I think maybe if we had a science museum or different kinds of museums, water park, skating ring, bowling center, dollar movies, teen clubs, gyms for young people with an indoor swimming pool and or gymnastics center. At the same time maybe the sue happy people will have all sorts of jobs that they will stop suing.
Maybe my Mom won't lose her pot plants to thieves. There we go many we need a store that sells pretty pots for plants. ha,ha..
Thanks for your time.
Eagle pass needs to do something with downtown some cafes or hang out places that bring live bands its a shame we live next to the border and cant do nothing with it for tourist people. I dont invite friends down here cause there is nothing to do.
Rick, I think that is an excellent idea. There is this cafe in town that is small and they have bistro type table and chairs outside. They usually have someone playing the guitar or a group outside and it generates customers because people like to relax after work.
First of all I like all the ideas I have read... but mostly, I think Dollar Movies for those movies that have passed, that other people get to watch for cheaper prices, and maybe take groups of kids there to enjoy... Would be very affordable... San Antonio, that I know of have I think atleast three of them, and people still go to the old shows.
Another idea that I am backing up is Having a bigger Cinema... most of the movies dont last long at the showcase because there is only room for three different movies at a time and well it gets sickenning to finally get a chance to go see a movie you like to see and its not there anymore so we just happen to drive to Del Rio, Uvalde or even into Mexico to watch the current movies that are no longer here... Another problem here with the Cinema is that, Alot of good movies dont get the chance to even come to Eagle Pass...
A small cafe, a theatre (plays), a club even... down town on main street to keep it active, attract tourists. I mean really why would we want three cantinas down main street right next to each other? That is rediculous. We need more action downtown with much less wino's walking the streets.
As for other restaurants, good idea... Not only are people tired of burgers and pizzas, y gallina (Chicken) but now even the same mexican plate everyone serves... Frijoles, arroz, y carne! BLAH!... Otra cosa porfavor... As for the chinese places, well they are not that bad, just the rumors stop me from going.
If I not mistaken, I think EP use to have a Skating Ring maybe like over 20 years ago, somewhere where BERNARD used to be. or where Sirloin Stockade is... No me acuerdo muy bien, but I think that would be a blast, as the same for a bowling alley. Ya ni Uvalde que esta mas chico, it has alot of more things to do than here. Porfavor! if the casino is bringing lots of tourist, why say we dont have enuff flow to bring other things to EP. No entiendo!
NOw about that other internet place. does anyone know anything about it GTS on el Indio highway?

There was one in the mall..
Maybe it went out of business like the rest of the mall shops after Walmart left.
There's been a couple a bookstores in the past but, unfortunately not successful. I went and bought children books at the one that was at the mall and they were more than I wanted to pay. I guess, I got use to the Half Price book stores around Dallas.

All these are wonderful ideas. But I don't think we can bypass the topic of the lawsuits. EAGLE PASS IS NOTORIOUS FOR LAWSUITS!!! What happened to Taco Cabana? How long was McDonald's open before someone tried to sue? And what about that big corporation (Japanese?) in the late 90's who did a study on Eagle Pass and decided that legal risk is TOO GREAT. It is no secret if you hit someone with your car (whether they are from here or from Mexico), you will get sued. I think people would be afraid to start a business like a skating rink (just asking for it) or a bowling alley (ditto). :( :( :(
Hopefully with all the new businesses that are coming to town the "sue happy" will change to an honest career. I guess, one can only hope.

Government Jobs?
Why does the government have to do everything for everyone? How about some private businesses opening and providing jobs which is exactly what we are discussing here.
The majority of Jobs in the US are not provided by the government or even by big companies. The majority of the jobs in the US are provided by small business.
The goverment should not exist to provide jobs or to give handouts either. The goverment should exist mostly to defend our country and a FEW other things. The idea that many seem to have is that every problem should be fixed by the government..
The government jobs that exist should only exist if they are needed NOT just to exist to provide jobs to people. Each goverment job that is created only cost us more and more in taxes. I prefer to work and keep a little more of what I work for instead of paying it out OVER and OVER in taxes for things that I did not ask for from my goverment in the first place.
I am sure most in EP will not agree with my take on things but.. Just my 2 cents and that's what a discussion board is about.

It's not just EP.. I know someone that was driving around totally unlicensed, got in an accident (not her fault) and sued the licensed drivers insurance company and got a check
This is the way things go all over the US.
Of course in EP it seems to be more of a career for some rather than a recreational past time as it is in other parts of the US.
Changing the subject away from an argument... A couple of years ago, while I lived in San Antonio, I visited West Telemarketting, and I was told by one of their employees that a call center was gonna be opened up in the Eagle Pass area. I dont recall when this was gonna happened, but as from what I know, I havent heard a thing here about that coming down here. Does anyone know about this?
As for Jobs or Careers, think EP is doing good with all these new restaraunts openning up, but how long are they gonna last, one doesnt know... Not all places are stable but trying doesnt hurt...
Most people are just used to living off Unemployment benefits. Ofcourse well deserved...
BTW does anyone have an IDEA who is hiring lately? lol
I think the economy in EP is improving. There are alot more jobs there than there were back in the days when I lived there. It is cycle..employment..make money, have money to spend..business grows and back to employing more. I really hope things work out in Eagle Pass and people will actually have a choice for jobs instead of just getting what's available.

What we really need right now is a bookstore. That is just terrible; a whole city without a single bookstore. I find it very inconvinient having to go out-of-town for a book I would like to buy.
I agree w/ you. I cannot think of anything better than browsing a bookstore. My preference are little bookstores w/ character. Do not get me wrong, for I like to browse Border's, but if EP had a "mom & pop", I would be in heaven.
They did have a "mom & pops" bookstore many years ago but, unfortunately it didn't last. Bookstores have not been successful in EP. I must admit I wasn't big on books in my younger years but, now I find myself there with my family on saturday nights. I have learned to enjoy them quite a bit.

too answer west telemarketing did not come to eagle pass becuase not enough people applied and not enough people in the town with experience
What i think would be good in eagle pass woudl be like some sort of center for kids like a sport center thats one things in eagle pass kids do alot of play sports they just opened one here in austin and its awesome it has 2 indoor basketball courts , swimming pool golf range and batting cages there is alot of things we can try to bring to eagle pass but unless our politicos get there hand out of the cookie jar noone will look at our community other than corrupt and as a major drug traffiking capitol
Boy ain't that the truth!!!! I've been waiting for things like that to happen since I was a kid and I'm still waiting. Maybe my grandkids might get to go!

Some of the funny things that happen is people getting prepared for a career at SWTJC and not having a market for any of these in EP. I know lots of people that study for Information Technology and end up working at wal mart or the casino. I think there should be more technological jobs in EP.

Well, that's the problem you see a lot with folks not just in Eagle Pass but also in Del Rio. These people go to SWTJC and get a degree in a field where there isn't any jobs in there town. Instead of going out and finding a job in another city they don't and settle for less and end up working in another job that really has no connection to their Degree. Yet they chose to stay because they just don't want to leave home.
We might blame Bush for the economy and not having enough jobs out there. But if you have a Degree chances are there is a job for you it might not be in your town but if you are willing to give up a bit to get what you want you will get it.

Actually I do have the right banner in my Signature. All I am saying here if you would have read my post. Is many people blame Bush for the economy yet if you have a College Degree there is no need to worry the Job you are looking for is out there. It just might not be in your Home Town. That was my Point. :P
As for Bush well if he's elected president once again. I might have to rewrite my post about how college people can find the job's they want.
And since the Economy is not my Main Concern right now. I really don't hold that against Bush. What I do have a Problem is with the War in Iraq and how he is dealing with it.

hi, da jackal i love the avatar ;) this is a good topic. I wont get into politics but about the eagle pass lawsuit issue, the main thing isn't having a good lawyer (although thats necessary) but finding someone to insure you at an affordable cost!...since im new im just going to comment on all the replies that caught my eye....
and thats a real shame about the telemarketing thing. I think a bill collection agency would work well here too...i used to work for one, and for the most part they don't look for previous experience just the right attitude ability to pass their test and training program. what is more they (most) have a good base pay and if you collect well a nice commission. The main problem the company i worked for encountered was finding peeps who were bilingual. now i know that wouldn't be a problem around here! :P
as for entertainment. BOOK STORE! i know i know it hasn't worked but i think it could. not a chain because they have to stock by national standards, but if there was one that could stock lots of books in Spanish and a nice selection in English i think it would do well...apart form that, a theater..i don't mean a movie theater but a real one. where people could put on plays or people with talent could ..i don't know play piano..sing opera...have a nice recital.... it would give people more to do around here not only for entertainment but the people who prepare for it. besides..with so many nice dress stores around here and material shops and semesteress ..or whaterver...dress makers ,r ight across the border, wouldn't it be nice to have more occasion to dress up!! if eagle pass could get a good acting company together it could become a tourist attraction..*shrug* well its and idea anyway.
Good points. It would be nice to have extra special occassions to dress up for. :)

What ever happened to the Book Store in you all's Mall? The Waldenbooks. I used to like the way the one in Eagle Pass looked. It was small but it seemed like the store was so long because if was not that wide. Plus they had lots of books to choose from. The One in Del Rio is still Open but the one in Eagle Pass felt more like a Book Store than the one in Del Rio. I guess since the Store in Del Rio is a bit bigger it's harder to get that cozy book store fell.
As for the Theater not a bad Idea PHEDRE. I am sure there are lots of folks in Eagle Pass that like acting. I don't know if you know but Del Rio does have a Theater and it is pretty popular each year they have Russian Ballerina's come into town and they perform in the Nutcracker. It's a really good show plus the and most of the people involved are all just local's from kids to adults. And the show is a big hit. The tickets are a bit expensive for the Nutcracker show but you should see the turn outs they get. They also have different shows each year. Some people just buy season tickets.
As for how Del Rio has the Theater. The city owns the theater and the city keeps it running. It's a pretty large theater with a large balcony on top as well.
Eagle Pass could do the same. And have Different shows all year round.
