You're supposed to defragment your computer to make it run faster. It rearranges saved files and programs. Well, is it bad if you defragment your computer too often? You're supposed to do it once a month but what if you do it like once a week?

I don't think doing this more often will hurt your computer..

All that you are doing is over working the hard drive though I suppose.

I am not saying defragmenting your drive is a bad thing or anything, I will just say that I spend many hours a day on my computers and I never defrag and all my computers still work :)

Conclusion, I think once a month is probably just fine and any more is just a waste of your time and your electricity..

Of course, this is just my 2 cents..

I defrag my computer at work twice a year and I've never had problems with it. My pc at home gets defragged monthly and also works ok. The funny thing is that I use the computer at work alot more than the one at home. :)

If you are noticing your computer slowing down or running sluggish, you may have way too many spyware or malware installed on your computer. Most of this programs constantly send information from your computer to which ever site installed the spyware on your computer. If your use Kazaa, Gator, Comet Curser, etc. then you have all this programs running all the time.
Go to this site and download Ad-aware. They have several version. I have been using their free version ever since I got on cable access.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Ad-aware will also clear all the cookies off your computer, but it has an ignore feature that allows you to keep the cookies you need in order to access some of the news sites or site you frequent.

wow, its about time that i can post. anyways, defragging all the time is bad, the only time you want to do it is when you delete or remove a bunch of crappy programs. Spybot search and destroy is the best for adaware and **I'm a dork** like that. antivirus, im positive some of you guys are gullable dumbasses downloading **I'm a dork** everyday, you wanna you use MCAFEE PRO 7, i think its the best, and it cant be beat. you also need to disable alot of **I'm a dork** that starts up with windows dont use the msconfig just yet use services.msc on run. you know start, then Run. anyways, if you have eye candy get rid of that **I'm a dork**, that slows stuff down, i dont care how much it tells you it doesnt, it really does slow stuff down

I have diskeeper, i can schedule it to defrags my pc and better yet, it stores files that are in constant use near the center of the drive where it can be accesed faster. You can download a free 30 day copy.

defragging more than once or twice a month isnt very time effective. Unless you install and then uninstall or delete program files a hundred times a day, once or so a month will do fine. Defragging also helps disk wear over time by cutting down on the number of times the drive reader has to run up and down the drive looking for the pieces of the files. I also agree that spybot search and destroy is an excellent syware killer. Adaware is good too, I recommend trying both out and seeing which one your more comferatable with.

Well for the computer user that never downloads alot of stuff and doen't burn alot of files doesn't have to defrag all that much, for those who download alot of files and erase alot, its important to defrag so your files can be located all in contiguous order, which makes lookups faster and easier on the drive.

I hardly ever download anything. I used to download music but I worried they would sue me.

Well most of the trouble comes when you download stuff and then start sharing it off of your computer. If one deletes the downloaded stuff and backs it up it should be fine. Also you are asking for trouble when you burn music and sell it to friends.

I recently had a computer class and the instructor told us that when he was in college he and a couple of class mates did a research on this. They had a few pc’s and did same amount of work on them but some where left un-fragged while some were. He said they did this over some months and that it turned out that defragging your pc will not make a big difference on the way it runs. But that was his theory, I still defrag mine.

Beats me, been in the IT industry for some time now..

I never defrag, ever.. I guess it could help, hell maybe I will do it tonight :)

I figure it's good to do once in a while but I would say nobody would die if they didn't do it.. I am still here :)
